만나르 지구
스리랑카의 만나르 지구는 북부 지방의 북서부에 위치해 있습니다. 면적은 1,996평방킬로미터입니다. 만나르는 만나르 지구의 주요 도시로, 어반 카운슬에 의해 관리됩니다. 도시는 만나르 섬에 위치하며, 만나르 만을 내려다보며 역사적인 케티스와람 사원이 있습니다. 과거 이 도시는 진주 어업의 중심지로 알려졌으며, 2세기 CE의 에리트라해 항해기에도 언급되어 있습니다. 만나르는 바오밥 나무와 만나르 요새로 유명합니다. 요새는 1560년에 포르투갈인이 건설하고, 1658년 네덜란드인이 점령 후 재건하였습니다. 성벽과 보루는 그대로 남아 있으나, 내부는 대부분 파괴되었습니다. 현대 도시의 경관은 교회, 힌두 사원, 모스크가 중심입니다. 가톨릭 교회는 이 도시에 교구 본부를 두고 있습니다. 철도를 통해 만나르선으로 스리랑카 다른 지역과 연결됩니다. 1983년부터 2009년까지 스리랑카 내전 기간 동안 이 도시는 LTTE에 점령되었습니다.
만나르 지구는 독특한 식생과 야생동물로 스리랑카 다른 지역과 대조됩니다. 만나르 섬은 스리랑카에서 바오밥 나무가 자라는 몇 안 되는 장소 중 하나입니다. 원숭이들이 열매를 좋아하기 때문에, 이 나무는 때때로 '원숭이빵 나무'라고도 불립니다.
듀공은 중형 해양 포유류로, 만나르 만, 나치쿠다, 자프나 섬, 아담스 브리지 근처에서 발견됩니다. IUCN 보호 상태는 과도한 포획과 어망에 의한 사고로 인해 '취약'으로 분류됩니다.
Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica라는 심각하게 멸종 위기에 처한 타란툴라 종은 만나르 지역에서 스리랑카에서 처음 발견되었습니다. 이는 인도 외부에서 기록된 첫 사례였습니다. 반칼라이 보호구역은 람사르 협약에 따라 국제적으로 중요한 습지 조류 보호 지역으로 인정되며, 만나르 섬 남쪽 본토에 위치하고 있습니다.
