Provincia occidentale
La provincia più densamente popolata di Sri Lanka, la Provincia Occidentale, che si estende su 3.593 km², ospita la capitale legislativa del paese, Sri Jayewardenepura. È anche sede del centro commerciale del paese, Colombo.
Quasi tutte le principali istituzioni educative dell'isola si trovano nella provincia occidentale. Le università della provincia includono l'Università di Colombo, l'Università di Sri Jayewardenepura, l'Università di Kelaniya, l'Open University dello Sri Lanka, la Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, l'Università di Moratuwa e il Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. La Provincia Occidentale ospita anche il maggior numero di scuole del paese.
La provincia occidentale è composta da tre distretti: Colombo, Gampaha e Kalutara.
Il Distretto di Colombo ha un'area di 642 km² e la sua città principale è Colombo. Le altre città popolari e importanti del distretto sono Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Homagama, Avissawella e Moratuwa. Il Kotte Urban Development Council, creato negli anni '30 con un edificio moderno a Rajagiriya, è stato sostituito dal Kotte Urban Council, una grande parte del quale è stata rimossa e aggiunta al Colombo Municipal Council, ward di Borella, mentre il Battaramulla Urban Council è stato sciolto e una piccola parte di Battaramulla è stata aggiunta al Kotte Urban Council. Il Kotte Urban Council è diventato il Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council nel 1997.
Mount Lavinia è una città di recente creazione situata immediatamente a sud di Colombo. È il risultato della combinazione di alcuni sobborghi urbani chiave e comunità a fini amministrativi. I centri comprendono Dehiwala e il resort balneare di Mount Lavinia. Qui si trovano anche i Giardini Zoologici Nazionali dello Sri Lanka, tra i più grandi dell'Asia. Dehiwala e Mount Lavinia si trovano direttamente a sud di Wellawatte lungo l'arteria della Galle Road, che corre lungo la costa a sud del paese. È una delle regioni più liberali dello Sri Lanka e ospita il festival annuale delle aquiloni arcobaleno dell'isola.
Il Distretto di Gampaha si estende su 1.386,6 km² e la sua città principale è Gampaha. Altre città popolari e importanti sono Nittambuwa, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo e Veyangoda.
Gampaha è una città urbana situata a nord di Colombo e separata da Colombo dal fiume Kelani. Il nome “Gampaha” in singalese significa “Cinque Villaggi”. Questa città si trova nel centro del Distretto di Gampaha ed è a circa 4 km da Miriswatta lungo la Colombo-Kandy Road. È circondata dalle città di Yakkala, Miriswatta, Weliweriya, Udugampola e Ja-Ela.
Negli ultimi anni, Gampaha ha subito uno sviluppo rapido: sono stati costruiti molti nuovi complessi commerciali, strade, ponti e sovrappassi. La maggior parte dei programmi di sviluppo in quest'area è stata guidata da istituzioni private.
Un altro distretto della provincia occidentale è Kalutara, che si estende su 1.606 km² e la sua città principale è Kalutara. Le altre città importanti e popolari di questo distretto sono Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Horana e Matugama.
Kalutara è una città di villeggiatura situata a circa 40 km a sud di Colombo.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
