District de Jaffna
Le district de Jaffna est l'un des 25 districts du Sri Lanka, la division administrative de niveau 2 du pays. Le district est administré par un secrétariat de district dirigé par un secrétaire de district (anciennement appelé agent du gouvernement), nommé par le gouvernement central du Sri Lanka. La capitale du district est la ville de Jaffna.
Entre le 5e siècle av. J.-C. et le 13e siècle apr. J.-C., l'actuel district de Jaffna faisait partie de divers royaumes tels que Pandya, Chola, Pallava, Kalinga et Rajarata. Le district de Jaffna a ensuite fait partie du royaume précolonial de Jaffna. Le district est ensuite passé sous contrôle portugais, néerlandais et britannique. En 1815, les Britanniques ont pris le contrôle de l'île entière de Ceylan. Ils ont divisé l'île en trois structures administratives basées sur l'ethnie : les Sinhalais du pays bas, les Sinhalais des montagnes et les Tamouls. Le district de Jaffna faisait partie de l'administration tamoule. En 1833, conformément aux recommandations de la commission Colebrooke-Cameron, les structures administratives basées sur l'ethnie ont été unifiées en une seule administration divisée en cinq provinces géographiques. Le district de Jaffna, ainsi que le district de Mannar et le district de Vanni, ont formé la nouvelle province du Nord. Lorsque Ceylan a obtenu son indépendance, Jaffna était l'un des trois districts situés dans la province du Nord. Des parties du district ont été transférées au nouveau district de Mullaitivu en septembre 1978. Le district de Kilinochchi a été découpé de la partie sud du district de Jaffna en février 1984.
Le district de Jaffna est situé dans le nord de Sri Lanka, dans la province du Nord, et couvre la majeure partie de la péninsule de Jaffna. Il a une superficie de 1 025 kilomètres carrés (396 miles carrés). Géographiquement, il est divisé en quatre zones :
