Eucalyptus globulus (Karupantine , Eucalyptus)

  

Eucalyptus globulus, commonly known as the blue gum tree, is a tall evergreen tree native to Australia and widely cultivated in Sri Lanka for its fast growth and medicinal properties. It is easily identified by its smooth bark, bluish-green leaves, and strong, refreshing aroma.

The leaves of Eucalyptus globulus are rich in essential oils, particularly eucalyptol, which is known for its antimicrobial, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory effects. The oil is commonly used in inhalants, balms, and liniments for treating colds, coughs, and respiratory ailments in both traditional and modern medicine.

In Sri Lanka, this species is often grown in the hill country regions like Nuwara Eliya and Badulla. Besides its medicinal uses, Eucalyptus globulus is also valued for its timber, fuelwood, and as a windbreak tree. Its strong scent helps repel insects, making it useful in natural pest control.

The tree thrives in well-drained soils and cooler climates and is typically evergreen throughout the year. Eucalyptus globulus remains an important part of Sri Lanka’s herbal landscape, offering both ecological benefits and a wide range of therapeutic applications.
