Puttalam-distriktet
Puttalam ist ein Distrikt nahe der Westküste von Sri Lanka. Er hat eine Fläche von 3.072 km² (1.186 Quadratmeilen). Zusammen mit dem Distrikt Kurunegala bildet er die Nordwestprovinz Sri Lankas. Die Distrikthauptstadt ist Puttalam, die im Norden an den Kala Oya und den Modaragam Aru grenzt, im Osten an den Distrikt Anuradhapura und den Distrikt Kurunegala, im Süden an den Ma Oya und im Westen an den Indischen Ozean. Puttalam ist bekannt für seine malerischen Lagunen, die sich besonders für flaches Meeresfischen und die Garnelenzucht eignen. Die Stadt Kalpitiya sowie die Kalpitiya-Halbinsel liegen ebenfalls in diesem Distrikt.
Der Distrikt Puttalam ist ein multireligiöses Gebiet. Der Buddhismus ist die vorherrschende Religion im Distrikt und besteht hier seit der frühen Zeit des Königreichs Anuradhapura. Die zweithäufigste Religion ist der römische Katholizismus. Neben diesen beiden Hauptreligionen sind auch Hinduismus, Christentum und Islam in der Region gut etabliert. Der hinduistische Tempel Munneswaram und die St.-Anna-Kirche von Thalawila zählen zu den bedeutenden historischen religiösen Stätten der Region.
