Okres Kandy
Okres Kandy je jedním z okresů Střední provincie na Srí Lance. Jeho rozloha činí 1906,3 km². Hlavním městem okresu je Kandy. Kandy bylo posledním hlavním městem starověké éry králů na Srí Lance. Město leží uprostřed kopců na náhorní plošině Kandy, která se rozprostírá v oblasti tropických plantáží, zejména čaje. Kandy je správním i náboženským centrem a zároveň hlavním městem Střední provincie. Nachází se zde také Chrám Buddhova zubu (Sri Dalada Maligawa), jedno z nejposvátnějších míst buddhistického světa. V roce 1988 byl vyhlášen památkou světového dědictví UNESCO.
Je druhým největším městem na ostrově a hlavním městem Střední provincie moderní Srí Lanky. Jeho geografická poloha z něj učinila významný dopravní uzel ostrova. Kandy je vstupní branou do Centrální vysočiny Srí Lanky a lze se sem dostat po hlavních silnicích ze všech směrů. Železniční trať z Colomba, přístavu na západním pobřeží, vede přes Kandy až do nejvzdálenějšího bodu, Badully, ve Střední vysočině. Hlavní silnice Colombo–Kandy a Kandy–Nuwara Eliya patří k nejmalebnějším na Srí Lance; silnice Colombo–Kandy prochází kaučukovými plantážemi a rýžovými poli, zatímco silnice Kandy–Nuwara Eliya se vine rýžovými poli a nekonečnými plantážemi čaje. Obě silnice stoupají klikatě přes řady kopců. V současnosti probíhají studie proveditelnosti nové dálnice mezi Colombem a Kandy přes Kadawathu a malebné město Katugastota.
Kandy se nachází v hornaté a hustě zalesněné vnitrozemské části ostrova. Město leží mezi několika horskými pásmy, včetně pohoří Knuckles a pohoří Hanthana, což mu dává nadmořskou výšku přibližně 500 metrů (1 600 stop). Leží vedle umělého jezera Kandy a jižně od rezervace Udawatta Kele. Dnes se však rozloha rezervace Udawatta Kele postupně zmenšuje.
Jeho klima je tropické deštné. Díky poloze Kandy ve středu ostrova a ve vyšší nadmořské výšce má město relativně vlhčí a chladnější teploty než zbytek tropického klimatu země, zejména pobřežní oblasti. Nuwara Eliya leží jižně od Kandy a má ještě chladnější klima díky své vyšší poloze. Přesto zůstává klima Kandy tropické, protože průměrné teploty po celý rok přesahují 18 °C. Město zažívá sušší období od ledna do dubna. Od května do července a od října do prosince oblast ovlivňují monzuny, kdy je počasí nestálé. Od března do poloviny května nastává mezimonzunové období s lehkými dešti a vysokou vlhkostí. Vlhkost se obvykle pohybuje mezi 70 % a 79 %.
Obyvatelé Kandy mají ve městě mnoho možností pro volný čas a zábavu. Kandy je proslulé každoročním průvodem známým jako Esala Perahera, během něhož je jedna z vnitřních schránek používaných k zakrytí Buddhova zubu nesena v majestátním průvodu ulicemi města.
