Okres Galle
Galle je okres v jižní provincii Srí Lanky. Je to jeden z 25 okresů Srí Lanky, druhotný administrativní celek země. Okres je spravován okresním sekretariátem, jehož činnost vede okresní sekretář (dříve známý jako vládní agent), který je jmenován centrální vládou Srí Lanky.
Jeho rozloha je 1 652 km² (638 čtverečních mil), z čehož 35 km² (14 čtverečních mil) je voda a 1 617 km² (624 čtverečních mil) je pevnina. Okres Galle je na severu ohraničen řekou Benthara, na jihu a západě Indickým oceánem a na východě okresy Matara a Ratnapura. Topografie okresu Galle je velmi rozmanitá. Klima v oblasti Hiniduma Patthuwa je velmi podobné klimatickým podmínkám centrální horské oblasti Srí Lanky. Tato oblast obsahuje deštné pralesy, které jsou zásobárnou vody pro většinu řek a jezer, které protékají Galle. Mezi ně patří i chráněná oblast Sinharaja Forest Reserve. Okres Galle leží v mírném klimatickém pásu.
Roční úhrn srážek je mezi 2000–2500 mm. Řeka Gin ("Gin Ganga") začíná na hoře Gongala v Hiniduma Patthuwa a během své dlouhé cesty (113 km) prochází oblastmi Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda Baddegama a Thelikada. Řeka zásobuje oblast o rozloze 922 km² (356 čtverečních mil). Na konci své cesty ústí do Indického oceánu v oblasti Ginthota v okrese Galle. Řeka Madu Ganga začíná na Polathu Kanda a protéká až k moři u Balapitiya a pomáhá udržovat ekologickou rovnováhu v okrese Galle.
V dávné historii Srí Lanky měl okres Galle důležité místo v bojích proti nepřátelům, jako hlavní město jižní provincie. Staré legendy odhalují, že v roce 1072 př. n. l. zahájil král Vijayabahu I. svou bitvu proti "Soli" v oblasti Thambalagamuwa v Hiniduma Patthuwa. Podle legendy během vlády krále Dambhadeniya Parakramabahu vedl svou bitvu proti královně Sugala v okrese Galle. Okres Galle byl velmi důležitý během vlády krále Maha Parakramabahu a výrazně pomohl Nizozemcům, Portugalcům a Britům při zakládání jejich království.
Galle byla nazývána "Gimhathitha". Sinhálské vyslovení "Gaala" pochází z slova "gala" (kámen). Gala znamená místo setkání volských vozů. Později bylo vyslovováno jako "Gaala", protože v okrese byly velké skály a kopce.
Řada jednotlivců z okresu Galle přispěla významně do sinhálské literatury. Thotagamuwa Vijayaba Pirivena, což byl slavný vzdělávací institut z období Kotte, vychoval mnoho významných vědců. Mezi známé obyvatele Galle patří Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera, Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera, Martin Wickramasinghe, Nandadasa Kodagoda, Edwin Ariyadasa, M. B. Ariyapala, Gunadasa Amarasekera, D. J. Literární festival Galle každoročně přitahuje 3 000 lidí do Galle v každém lednu, přitahující spisovatele z celé jižní Asie.
