Okres Mannar
Okres Mannar se nachází na severozápadě Srí Lanky v Severní provincii. Má rozlohu 1 996 km² (771 čtverečních mil). Město Mannar je hlavním městem okresu Mannar a je spravováno městskou radou. Město se nachází na ostrově Mannar s výhledem na Mannarský záliv a je domovem historického chrámu Ketheeswaram. V minulosti bylo město proslulé jako centrum lovu perel a je zmíněno ve spise Periplus Erythrejského moře z 2. století n. l. Mannar je známý svými baobaby a svou pevností, kterou postavili Portugalci v roce 1560, poté ji v roce 1658 dobyli Nizozemci a znovu přestavěli; její hradby a bastiony jsou stále zachovalé, i když vnitřní část je z velké části zničena. Z vizuálního hlediska je moderní město charakteristické svými kostely, hinduistickými chrámy a mešitami. Katolická církev zde má diecézi se sídlem ve městě. Po železnici je město spojeno se zbytkem Srí Lanky tratí Mannar. Během občanské války na Srí Lance mezi lety 1983 a 2009 bylo město obsazeno LTTE.
Okres Mannar je jedinečný svou vegetací a živočišstvem, které se výrazně liší od zbytku Srí Lanky. Ostrov Mannar je jedním z mála míst v zemi, kde se daří baobabům. Opice milují jejich plody, a proto je tento strom někdy známý jako „opičí chlebovník“.
Kapustňák dugong je středně velký mořský savec, který se vyskytuje v Mannarském zálivu, v oblasti Nachchikuda, na ostrově Jaffna a poblíž Adamova mostu (Ram Sethu). Jeho status ochrany podle IUCN je „zranitelný“, a to kvůli nadměrnému lovu pro potravu a náhodnému zachycení do rybářských sítí.
Kriticky ohrožený druh sklípkana známý jako Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica byl poprvé nalezen na Srí Lance právě v oblasti Mannaru. Bylo to vůbec poprvé, kdy byl tento pavouk zaznamenán mimo Indii. Ptačí rezervace Vankalai, mezinárodně uznávaná jako významná oblast pro mokřadní ptactvo podle Ramsarské úmluvy, se nachází na pevnině těsně jižně od ostrova Mannar.
