Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī was the aunt and stepmother of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha. After Siddhartha left his royal life to seek enlightenment, Mahāprajāpatī became the first woman to be ordained as a Buddhist nun (bhikkhuni). She led the Bhikkhuni Sangha and played a crucial role in the early spread of Buddhism among women.
