Katunayake Airport
Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), commonly known as Katunayake Airport, is the main international gateway to Sri Lanka. Located in Katunayake, about 30 kilometers north of Colombo, it serves as the country’s busiest and most significant airport. The airport is named after former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike and is operated by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. It plays a vital role in connecting Sri Lanka with major international destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.
Katunayake Airport consists of multiple terminals, with Terminal 1 handling international flights and Terminal 2 currently under development to accommodate increasing passenger traffic. The airport offers modern amenities, including duty-free shopping, lounges, restaurants, and currency exchange services. As the hub for SriLankan Airlines, the airport facilitates both passenger and cargo operations, contributing significantly to the country’s tourism and economy.
In recent years, several expansion and renovation projects have been undertaken to improve the airport’s facilities and enhance passenger experience. The addition of advanced security systems, upgraded runways, and a more efficient immigration process has positioned Katunayake Airport as a key regional aviation hub. With Sri Lanka’s growing tourism industry, BIA continues to evolve, ensuring smoother travel experiences for millions of visitors each year.
