Bezirk Vavuniya
Der Vavuniya District ist einer der 25 Distrikte von Sri Lanka, der administrativen Einheit zweiten Grades des Landes. Der Distrikt wird von einem Distriktssekretariat verwaltet, das von einem Distriktssekretär (früher als Regierungsagent bekannt) geführt wird, der von der Zentralregierung von Sri Lanka ernannt wird. Die Hauptstadt des Distrikts ist die Stadt Vavuniya.
Zwischen dem 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. und dem 13. Jahrhundert n. Chr. war der heutige Vavuniya District Teil von Rajarata. Danach wurde der Vavuniya District von den Vanniar-Häuptlingen regiert, die dem vorkolonialen Jaffna-Königreich Tribut zahlten. Der Distrikt kam dann unter portugiesische, niederländische und britische Kontrolle. 1815 erlangten die Briten die Kontrolle über die gesamte Insel Ceylon. Sie unterteilten die Insel in drei ethnisch basierte Verwaltungsstrukturen: die Sinhalese aus den Tiefländern, die Kandyan Sinhalese und die Tamilen. Der Distrikt, der damals Vanni District genannt wurde, war Teil der tamilischen Verwaltung. 1833, gemäß den Empfehlungen der Colebrooke-Cameron-Kommission, wurden die ethnisch basierten Verwaltungsstrukturen zu einer einzigen Verwaltung vereint, die in fünf geografische Provinzen unterteilt wurde. Der Vanni District, zusammen mit dem Jaffna District und Mannar District, bildete die neue Northern Province.
Der Vanni District wurde später in Mullaitivu District umbenannt und dann in Vavuniya District. Als Ceylon die Unabhängigkeit erlangte, war Vavuniya einer der drei Distrikte in der Northern Province. Mullaitivu District wurde im September 1978 aus dem nördlichen Teil des Vavuniya District ausgegliedert.
Teile des Vavuniya District standen während des Bürgerkriegs viele Jahre unter der Kontrolle der Rebellengruppe Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Der gesamte Distrikt wurde 2008 von der srilankischen Armee zurückerobert.
