Bezirk Trincomalee
Der Trincomalee-Distrikt ist einer der 25 Distrikte von Sri Lanka, der administrativen Untereinheit des Landes. Der Distrikt wird von einem Distriktssekretariat verwaltet, das von einem Distriktssekretär (früher als Regierungsagent bekannt) geleitet wird, der von der Zentralregierung von Sri Lanka ernannt wird. Die Bevölkerung des Distrikts, wie auch der Rest des Ostens und Nordens, wurde stark vom Bürgerkrieg beeinflusst. Der Krieg forderte schätzungsweise 100.000 Todesopfer. Mehrere hunderttausend sri-lankische Tamilen, möglicherweise bis zu einer Million, emigrierten während des Krieges in den Westen. Viele sri-lankische Tamilen zogen auch in die relative Sicherheit der Hauptstadt Colombo. Der Krieg führte auch dazu, dass viele Menschen aus allen ethnischen und religiösen Gruppen, die im Distrikt lebten, in andere Teile von Sri Lanka flohen, obwohl die meisten von ihnen seit dem Ende des Bürgerkriegs in den Distrikt zurückgekehrt sind.
Die aufgezeichnete Geschichte von Trincomalee erstreckt sich über mehr als zweieinhalbtausend Jahre, beginnend mit der zivilen Besiedlung im Zusammenhang mit dem Koneswaram-Tempel in der vormodernen Ära. Als eine der ältesten Städte Asiens hat sie als wichtiger maritimer Hafen in der internationalen Handelsgeschichte der Insel mit Südostasien gedient. Aus ihrem Vorort Kankuveli stammte ein Teil der frühesten medizinischen Forschung Asiens an der „Agathiyar Thapanam“, der Siddhar-Tamilischen medizinischen Universität, die von Agastya gegründet wurde und half, die tamilische Tamraparniyan-Kultur über den Kontinent zu verbreiten. In der Antike war es nacheinander die Hauptstadt der östlichen Königreiche des Vanni-Landes, das sich unter dem Anuradhapura-Reich, der Pallava-Dynastie, der Chola-Dynastie, der Pandya-Dynastie, den Vannimai-Häuptlingreichen und dem Jaffna-Königreich durch die Einnahmen des Koneswaram-Schreins entwickelte.
Die Urbanisierung von Trincomalee setzte sich fort, als es nach der portugiesischen Eroberung des Jaffna-Königreichs zu einer befestigten Hafenstadt wurde. Die Kontrolle wechselte zwischen den Dänen im Jahr 1620, den Holländern, den Franzosen nach einer Schlacht im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg und den Briten im Jahr 1795, bevor es 1815 in den britischen Ceylon-Staat eingegliedert wurde. Die Architektur der Stadt zeigt einige der besten Beispiele für die Interaktion zwischen einheimischen und europäischen Stilen. Die Stadt wurde 1942 von den Japanern im Rahmen des Angriffs auf den Indischen Ozean während des Zweiten Weltkriegs angegriffen, und die Stadt sowie der Distrikt wurden nach der Unabhängigkeit von Sri Lanka 1948 beeinflusst, als das politische Verhältnis zwischen den Tamilen und den Singhalesen sich verschlechterte und in einem Bürgerkrieg gipfelte.
