Naaran Kavum (නාරං කැවුම්)
Naran Kavum is an easy, tasty alternative if you're not in the mood for Konda Kavum new year season. Naran Kavum is a sweet dish which mainly had coconut, sugar and rice flour as ingredients. It very much resembles our sukiyan in appearance and taste. We generally use jaggery as the sweetener in sukhiyan but lankan use sugar for sweetening.
Serving: 10 naran kavums
STEP 1: The Pani Pol
Ingredients
- Coconut - 150g
- Jaggery - 200g
- Cardamom - a few
- Cinnamon - a few
- Cloves - a few
- Water - 50ml
- Lime - 2 slices
Method
- Add the water to a deep pan on the stove
- Add jaggery
- Add cardamom, cloves and cinnamon
- Wait till jaggery melts before adding coconut
- Add lime
- Cook for a few minutes, till thick
STEP 2: The Kavum Batter
Ingredients
- Flour - 150g
- Water - 100ml
- Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Salt - a pinch
- Sugar - a pinch
Method
- To a bowl of flour, add turmeric powder
- Add salt
- Add sugar
- Mix
- Add water little by little and mix gradually to a smooth batter
STEP 3: Frying
- Fill a deep pan with oil and heat
- Make small balls out of the pani pol mixture
- Dip the balls into the kavum batter
- Drop them into the hot oil and fry till golden brown
