Nuwara Eliya Bölgesi
Nuwara Eliya ilçesi, Orta Eyalet, Sri Lanka’da yer alan bir ilçedir ve turist şehri Nuwara Eliya etrafında merkezlenmiştir. İsminin anlamı “ova üzerindeki şehir (masa arazi)” veya “ışık şehri”dir. Bu şehir, Nuwara Eliya ilçesinin idari başkenti olup, muhteşem doğal manzaraları ve ılıman iklimi ile bilinir. 1.868 metre (6.128 fit) yükseklikte yer alır ve Sri Lanka’da çay üretimi için en önemli yer olarak kabul edilir. Şehir, 1846 yılında Albert Gölü ve Yukarı Nil’i keşfeden Samuel Baker tarafından kurulmuştur. Nuwara Eliya’nın iklimi, burayı Britanya sivil memurları ve adadaki plantasyon sahipleri için ana sığınak haline getirmiştir. Küçük İngiltere olarak adlandırılan Nuwara Eliya, Britanya sömürgecilerinin tilki avı, geyik avı, fil avı, polo, golf ve kriket gibi hobilerini gerçekleştirebildikleri bir dağlık bölgeydi. Yüksek rakımı nedeniyle Nuwara Eliya, belirgin kurak sezonu olmayan, muson benzeri bulutlu dönemleri olan ve yıllık ortalama 16 °C (61 °F) sıcaklığa sahip bir subtropikal yüksek dağ iklimine sahiptir. Kış aylarında geceleri don görülebilir, ancak gündüzleri güneşin yüksek açısı nedeniyle hızla ısınır.
Şehir, Sinhala ve Tamil Yeni Yılı sırasında, özellikle Nisan ayında gerçekten canlanır. Festivaller her yıl 1 Nisan’da törenle başlar. Nisan ayında başlıca etkinlikler arasında motor ve at yarışları yer alır. Motor yarışları, 1934’ten beri düzenlenen Mahagastotte ve Radella Hill Climbs ile canlanır. Nuwara Eliya Yol Yarışı ve Gregory Gölü kenarındaki 4X4 Lake Cross yarışları, çok sayıda meraklıyı çeker. Otellerde gece partileri düzenlenir ve sezon, Nuwara Eliya Hipodromu’nda dokuz furlong (1811 m) mesafeli Governor's Cup, Nuwara Eliya Golf Kulübü’nde golf turnuvaları ve ay sonunda çiçek sergisi ile sona erer.
Galway's Land Kuş Koruma Alanı, Gregory Gölü yakınında, şehirden birkaç kilometre doğuda bulunan bir dağlık orman alanıdır. 0,6 km²’lik bir alanı kaplar ve vahşi domuzlar ve barking deer dahil olmak üzere Sri Lanka’ya özgü birçok kuş ve memeli türüne ev sahipliği yapar. Sabah erken ziyaretler, hem vahşi yaşamı görmek hem de sabah ilerleyen saatlerde sis oluşmadan Dünya Sonu’nu görmek için en iyisidir.
