Mannar Bölgesi
Mannar ilçesi, Sri Lanka'nın Kuzey Eyaletinin kuzeybatısında yer almaktadır. Alanı 1.996 kilometrekaredir. Mannar, ilçenin başkenti olup bir şehir konseyi tarafından yönetilmektedir. Şehir, Mannar Adasında, Mannar Körfezi'ne bakacak şekilde konumlanmıştır ve tarihi Ketheeswaram Tapınağı'na ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Geçmişte şehir, inci avcılığının merkezi olarak biliniyordu ve M.Ö. 2. yüzyılda Eritre Denizi Periplusu'nda belirtilmiştir. Mannar, baobab ağaçları ve 1560 yılında Portekizliler tarafından inşa edilen ve 1658’de Hollandalılar tarafından ele geçirilip yeniden yapılan Mannar Kalesi ile tanınır; kalenin surları ve bastiyonları sağlamdır, ancak iç kısmı büyük ölçüde tahrip olmuştur. Modern şehir, görsel olarak kiliseler, Hindu tapınakları ve camiler tarafından domine edilmektedir. Katolik kilisesinin şehirde bir piskoposluk merkezi bulunmaktadır. Şehir, Mannar Hattı üzerinden Sri Lanka'nın diğer bölgelerine demiryolu ile bağlıdır. 1983–2009 yılları arasında Sri Lanka İç Savaşı sırasında şehir LTTE tarafından işgal edilmiştir.
Mannar ilçesi, bitki örtüsü ve vahşi yaşam açısından benzersizdir ve Sri Lanka'nın diğer bölgelerinden farklıdır. Mannar Adası, Sri Lanka’da baobab ağaçlarının yetiştiği nadir yerlerden biridir. Maymunlar bu meyveleri çok sever, bu yüzden ağaç bazen maymun-ekmeği ağacı olarak anılır.
Deniz ineği (dugong), Mannar Körfezi, Nachchikuda, Cafna Adası ve Adem Köprüsü çevresinde görülen orta boy bir deniz memelisidir. IUCN koruma durumu, aşırı avlanma ve balık ağlarına kazara takılma nedeniyle “savunmasız” olarak sınıflandırılmıştır.
Critically endangered (kritik derecede tehlike altındaki) bir tarantula türü olan Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica, Sri Lanka’da ilk kez Mannar bölgesinde keşfedilmiştir. Bu, türün Hindistan dışındaki ilk kaydıdır. Vankalai Koruma Alanı, Ramsar Sözleşmesi uyarınca sulak alan kuşları için uluslararası öneme sahip bir bölge olarak kabul edilmiştir ve Mannar Adası’nın güneyindeki ana kara üzerinde yer almaktadır.
