Vavuniya Bölgesi
Vavuniya Bölgesi, Sri Lanka'nın 25 bölgesinden birisidir ve ülkenin ikinci seviyedeki idari birimidir. Bölge, Sri Lanka merkezi hükümeti tarafından atanan bir İlçe Sekreteri (eski adıyla Hükümet Temsilcisi) tarafından yönetilen İlçe Sekreterliği tarafından idare edilmektedir. Bu bölgenin başkenti Vavuniya şehridir.
M.Ö. 5. yüzyıldan 13. yüzyıla kadar günümüz Vavuniya Bölgesi, Rajarata'nın bir parçasıydı. Daha sonra, Vavuniya Bölgesi, pre-koloniyal Jaffna Krallığı'na vergi ödeyen Vanniar Beylikleri tarafından yönetiliyordu. Bölge daha sonra Portekiz, Hollanda ve Britanya'nın kontrolüne geçti. 1815 yılında Britanyalılar, Ceylon adasının tamamında kontrolü ele geçirdi. Adayı üç etnik temele dayalı idari yapıya böldüler: Düşük Ülke Singalese, Kandyan Singalese ve Tamil. Vanni Bölgesi daha sonra Mullaitivu Bölgesi olarak yeniden adlandırıldı ve ardından Vavuniya Bölgesi olarak değiştirildi. Ceylon'un bağımsızlık kazandığı sırada, Vavuniya Kuzey Bölgesi'nde bulunan üç bölgeden biriydi. Mullaitivu Bölgesi Eylül 1978'de Vavuniya Bölgesi'nin kuzey kısmından ayrıldı.
Vavuniya Bölgesi'nin bazı kısımları, iç savaş sırasında yıllarca Tamil Eelam Kurtuluş Kaplanları'nın kontrolü altındaydı. Bölge, 2008'de Sri Lanka ordusu tarafından yeniden alındı.
