Mullaitivu Bölgesi
Mullaitivu Bölgesi, Sri Lanka’nın 25 bölgesinden biridir ve ülkenin ikinci düzey idari bölümünü oluşturur. Bölge, Sri Lanka merkezi hükümeti tarafından atanan bir Bölge Sekreteri (önceden Hükümet Temsilcisi olarak bilinirdi) tarafından yönetilen bir Bölge Sekreterliği aracılığıyla idare edilmektedir. Bölgenin başkenti Mullaitivu kentidir.
Günümüzdeki Mullaitivu Bölgesinin bazı kısımları, sömürge öncesi dönemde Jaffna Krallığı’nın bir parçasıydı. Bölge daha sonra Portekiz, Hollanda ve Britanya yönetimi altına girdi. 1815 yılında Britanyalılar tüm Seylan Adası’nın kontrolünü ele geçirerek adayı etnik temelli üç idari yapıya ayırdılar: Alçak Ülke Sinhalaları, Kandy Sinhalaları ve Tamiller. O dönemde Vanni Bölgesinin bir parçası olan bu bölge, Tamil idaresine bağlıydı. 1833 yılında Colebrooke–Cameron Komisyonu’nun tavsiyeleri doğrultusunda etnik temelli idari yapılar birleştirilerek beş coğrafi eyalete ayrılmış tek bir idari sistem oluşturuldu. Vanni Bölgesi, Jaffna Bölgesi ve Mannar Bölgesi ile birlikte yeni Kuzey Eyaletini oluşturdu.
Vanni Bölgesi daha sonra Mullaitivu Bölgesi ve ardından Vavuniya Bölgesi olarak yeniden adlandırıldı. Bölge, 18. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Jaffna Yarımadası’ndan, özellikle Alaveddy, Udupiddy ve Navaly’den gelen yerleşimciler tarafından kolonize edildi. Seylan bağımsızlığını kazandığında Vavuniya, Kuzey Eyaletinde yer alan üç bölgeden biriydi. Mullaitivu Bölgesi, Vavuniya Bölgesinin kuzey kısmından ve o dönemdeki Jaffna Bölgesi, Mannar Bölgesi ile Trincomalee Bölgesinin bazı kısımlarından ayrılarak Eylül 1978’de oluşturuldu.
İç savaş sırasında Mullaitivu Bölgesi uzun yıllar boyunca Tamil Eelam Kurtuluş Kaplanları (LTTE) adlı isyancı grubun kontrolü altında kaldı. Bölge, 2009 yılının başlarında Sri Lanka ordusu tarafından yeniden ele geçirildi.
Mullaitivu Bölgesi, Sri Lanka’nın kuzeydoğusunda, Kuzey Eyaleti sınırları içinde yer almaktadır. Yüzölçümü 2.617 kilometrekare (1.010 mil kare)dir.
Mullaitivu Bölgesi, her biri bir Bölgesel Sekreter (önceden Yardımcı Hükümet Temsilcisi olarak bilinirdi) tarafından yönetilen altı Bölgesel Sekreterlik bölümüne (DS Divisions) ayrılmıştır. Bu bölümler ayrıca 136 Grama Niladhari bölümüne (GN Divisions) ayrılmaktadır.
