Galle bölgesi
Galle, Sri Lanka'nın Güney Bölgesi'nde bir ilçedir. Sri Lanka'nın 25 ilçesinden biri olup, ülkenin ikinci düzey idari birimidir. İlçe, Sri Lanka merkezi hükümeti tarafından atanan bir İlçe Sekreteri (önceden Hükümet Temsilcisi olarak biliniyordu) tarafından yönetilen bir İlçe Sekreterliği tarafından yönetilmektedir.
Yüzölçümü 1.652 km² (638 mil kare) olup, bunun 35 km² (14 mil kare) su, 1.617 km² (624 mil kare) ise kara alanıdır. Galle ilçesi, kuzeyde Benthara Nehri, güneyde ve batıda Hindistan Okyanusu, doğuda ise Matara ve Ratnapura ilçeleriyle sınırdır. Galle ilçesinin topoğrafyası oldukça çeşitlidir. Hiniduma Patthuwa bölgesinin iklimi, Sri Lanka'nın merkezi dağlık bölgelerine çok benzer. Bu bölge, çoğu nehir ve göletin su kaynakları olan yağmur ormanlarından oluşmaktadır. Sinharaja Orman Rezervi bunlardan biridir. Galle ilçesi, ılıman iklim kuşağında yer almaktadır.
Yıllık yağış miktarı 2000–2500 mm arasında değişmektedir. Gin Nehri ("Gin Ganga"), Hiniduma Patthuwa'daki Gongala Tepesi'nden başlayarak 113 km (70 mil) uzunluğunda bir yolculuk yapar. Bu yolculuk boyunca Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda Baddegama ve Thelikada bölgelerinden geçer. Nehir, 922 km² (356 mil kare) alanı sulamaktadır. Gin Nehri, Galle ilçesinin Ginthota bölgesinde Hindistan Okyanusu'na dökülür. Madu Ganga Nehri, Polathu Kanda'dan başlar ve Balapitiya'dan denize akar ve Galle ilçesinde ekolojik dengeyi korumaya yardımcı olur.
Eski Sri Lanka'da, Galle ilçesi, Güney Bölgesi'nin başkenti olarak düşmanlara karşı yapılan savaşlarda önemli bir yer edinmiştir. Eski efsanelere göre, M.S. 1072'de Kral Vijayabahu I, Hiniduma Patthuwa'daki Thambalagamuwa'da "Soli"ye karşı savaşına başlamıştır. Efsanelere göre, Kral Dambhadeniya Parakramabahu döneminde, Kral Parakramabahu, Galle ilçesinde Kraliçe Sugala'ya karşı savaşmıştır. Galle, Kral Maha Parakramabahu'nun hükümetinde çok önemli bir bölgeydi ve Hollandalılar, Portekizliler ve İngilizlerin kendi krallıklarını kurmalarına çok yardımcı oldu.
Galle, "Gimhathitha" olarak adlandırılıyordu. Sinhalaca telaffuz "Gaala", "gala" (taş) kelimesinden türemiştir. Gala, öküz arabalarının buluşma noktası anlamına gelir. Daha sonra, bu bölgedeki büyük taşlar ve tepeler nedeniyle "Gaala" olarak telaffuz edilmiştir.
Galle ilçesinden birçok kişi, Sinhalaca edebiyatına önemli katkılarda bulunmuştur. Kotte döneminin ünlü eğitim kurumu olan Thotagamuwa Vijayaba Pirivena, birçok önemli alimi yetiştirmiştir. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera, Migettuwatte Gunananda Thera, Martin Wickramasinghe, Nandadasa Kodagoda, Edwin Ariyadasa, M.B. Ariyapala, Gunadasa Amarasekera, D.J. Wimalasurendra, Senarath Paranavithana, A.T. Ariyaratne ve Ariyapala Gurunnanse, Galle'nin tanınmış sakinlerinden bazılarıdır.
Galle Edebiyat Festivali, her yıl Ocak ayında Galle'ye 3.000 kişi getirir ve Güney Asya'dan yazarları cezbetmektedir.
