Ampara-distriktet
Ampara District är en av de 25 distrikten i Sri Lanka, de andra nivåns administrativa enheter i landet. Distriktet administreras av ett distriktssekretariat som leds av en distriktssekreterare (tidigare känd som en regeringsagent) som utses av Sri Lankas centralregering. Huvudstaden i distriktet är staden Ampara. Distriktet delades från den södra delen av Batticaloa distrikt i april 1961.
Ampara District ligger i sydöstra Sri Lanka i Eastern Province. Det har en yta på 4 415 kvadratkilometer (1 705 kvadrat miles). Det gränsar till distrikten Batticaloa och Polonnaruwa i norr, Indiska oceanen i öster, Hambantota District i söder, Badulla och Matale distrikten i nordväst och Monaragala District i väster och sydost.
Den nordvästra landtungan av Ampara District (Dehiyattakandiya D.S. division) är separerad från resten av distriktet och Eastern Province av Maduru Oya reservoaren.
Ampara Districts befolkning var 648 057 år 2012. Distriktet är ett av de mest mångsidiga i Sri Lanka, både etniskt och religiöst.
Befolkningen i distriktet, som resten av östra och norra Sri Lanka, påverkades av inbördeskriget. Kriget dödade uppskattningsvis 100 000 människor. Hundratusentals sinhaleser flyttade till västra sidan av landet. Många Sri Lankiska Tamiler flyttade också till huvudstaden Colombo för relativ säkerhet. Kriget orsakade också att många människor från alla etniska och religiösa grupper som bodde i distriktet flydde till andra delar av Sri Lanka, även om de flesta av dem har återvänt till distriktet sedan slutet av inbördeskriget.
