The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (known as Ceylon until 1972) is located in the Indian Ocean between the Laccadive Sea in the west and the Bay of Bengal in the east, separated by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar from Tamil Nadu, an Indian state on the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent.

Prowincja Północno-Zachodnia
Północno-Zachodnia Prowincja składa się z dwóch jednostek administracyjnych, mianowicie Kurunegala i Puttalam. Stolica prowincji to Kurunegala z populacją 28 571 mieszkańców. Prowincja jest znana z plantacji kokosów. Inne główne miasta w tej prowincji to Chilaw (24 712) i Puttalam (45 661), które są niewielkimi miasteczkami rybackimi. Większość ludności prowincji stanowią Syngalezi. W okolicach Puttalam mieszka także znaczna mniejszość Muzułmanów (Sri Lankan Moor), a w Udappuwa i Munneswarama – Tamilowie ze Sri Lanki. Rybołówstwo, hodowla krewetek i plantacje kauczuku to inne znaczące gałęzie przemysłu w regionie. Prowincja zajmuje powierzchnię 7 888 km² i ma populację 2 184 136 mieszkańców. Klimat jest tropikalny, z wyraźną porą suchą, a średnie temperatury wahają się od 20°C w styczniu do 25°C w marcu. Południe prowincji jest bardziej wilgotne, z rocznymi opadami wynoszącymi 2000 mm, natomiast północ jest jednym z najsuchszych regionów Sri Lanki, ze średnimi rocznymi opadami 1100 mm.
Prowincja obfituje w wiele stanowisk archeologicznych, będąc siedzibą czterech średniowiecznych królestw Sri Lanki w okresie od połowy XII do połowy XIV wieku. Choć królowie Sri Lanki byli zmuszeni do przenoszenia stolic z powodu najazdów obcych, i tak budowali wspaniałe cytadele w miejscach takich jak Panduwasnuwara, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa i Kurunegala. Imponujące pozostałości tych cytadeli, pałaców, buddyjskich świątyń i klasztorów oferują odwiedzającym zapierające dech w piersiach widoki.
Prowincja jest również domem dla innych starożytnych buddyjskich świątyń skalnych, głównie z korzeniami sięgającymi I wieku p.n.e., z freskami na ścianach i sufitach, ogromnymi posągami Buddy, inskrypcjami kamiennymi i rzeźbami datowanymi od wczesnego średniowiecza do XVIII wieku.
Z błyszczącymi, niebieskimi falami Oceanu Indyjskiego i malowniczymi tropikalnymi lagunami, prowincja posiada długą linię szerokich, złocistych plaż nasłonecznionych słońcem. Plaże te rozciągają się od Waikkal na południowym końcu do Dutch Bay w dystrykcie Puttalam.
Niektóre z najlepszych ośrodków wypoczynkowych na plaży w prowincji to Marawila, Talawila, Kalpitiya i Waikkal. Te plaże często mają dodatkowo lagunę lub dostęp do rzeki, co czyni je doskonałą bazą na wakacje przy plaży. Niektóre ośrodki oferują również możliwość podziwiania podwodnych koralowych cudów w pobliżu Kandakuliya i Karaitivu. W wielu miejscach nadbrzeżnych można spotkać wioski rybackie.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
