Westelijke provincie
De dichtstbevolkte provincie van Sri Lanka, de Westelijke Provincie, met een oppervlakte van 3.593 km², is de thuisbasis van de wetgevende hoofdstad van het land, Sri Jayewardenepura. Het is ook de locatie van het commerciële centrum van het land, Colombo.
Bijna alle vooraanstaande onderwijsinstellingen van het eiland bevinden zich in de Westelijke Provincie. Universiteiten in de provincie zijn onder andere de Universiteit van Colombo, de Universiteit van Sri Jayewardenepura, de Universiteit van Kelaniya, de Open Universiteit van Sri Lanka, de Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, de Universiteit van Moratuwa en het Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. De Westelijke Provincie heeft ook het grootste aantal scholen in het land.
De Westelijke Provincie bestaat uit drie districten: Colombo, Gampaha en Kalutara.
Het district Colombo heeft een oppervlakte van 642 km² en de hoofdplaats is Colombo. Andere populaire en belangrijke steden in het district zijn Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Homagama, Avissawella en Moratuwa. De Kotte Urban Development Council, opgericht in de jaren 1930 met een modern gebouw in Rajagiriya, werd opgevolgd door de Kotte Urban Council, waarvan een groot deel werd verwijderd en toegevoegd aan de Colombo Municipal Council, wijk Borella, terwijl de Battaramulla Urban Council werd opgeheven en een klein deel van Battaramulla werd toegevoegd aan de Kotte Urban Council. De Kotte Urban Council werd in 1997 de Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council.
Mount Lavinia is een nieuw gevormde stad net ten zuiden van Colombo. Het is het resultaat van het samenvoegen van enkele belangrijke stedelijke buitenwijken en gemeenschappen voor administratieve doeleinden. De centra omvatten Dehiwala en het strandresort Mount Lavinia. Het is ook de thuisbasis van de Nationale Dierentuin van Sri Lanka, een van de grootste in Azië. Dehiwala en Mount Lavinia liggen direct ten zuiden van Wellawatte langs de Galle Road, die langs de kust van het zuiden van het land loopt. Het is een van de meest liberale regio's van Sri Lanka en organiseert jaarlijks het Rainbow Kite Festival van het eiland.
Het district Gampaha heeft een oppervlakte van 1.386,6 km² en de hoofdplaats is Gampaha. Andere populaire en belangrijke steden zijn Nittambuwa, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo en Veyangoda.
Gampaha is een stedelijke stad ten noorden van Colombo en gescheiden van Colombo door de Kelani-rivier. De naam “Gampaha” betekent in het Singalees “Vijf Dorpen”. Deze stad ligt in het centrum van het district Gampaha en is ongeveer 4 km van Miriswatta aan de Colombo-Kandy Road. Het wordt omringd door de steden Yakkala, Miriswatta, Weliweriya, Udugampola en Ja-Ela.
In de afgelopen jaren heeft Gampaha een snelle ontwikkeling doorgemaakt; er zijn veel nieuwe winkelcomplexen, wegen, bruggen en fly-overs gebouwd. De meeste ontwikkelingsprogramma's in dit gebied werden uitgevoerd door particuliere instellingen.
Een ander district van de Westelijke Provincie is Kalutara, met een oppervlakte van 1.606 km² en de hoofdplaats is Kalutara. Andere belangrijke en populaire steden in dit district zijn Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Horana en Matugama.
Kalutara is een resortstad, ongeveer 40 km ten zuiden van Colombo gelegen.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
