Mitsubishi Pajero
De Mitsubishi Pajero is een full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) die wereldwijd door Mitsubishi werd geproduceerd en op de markt gebracht over vier generaties — hij werd geïntroduceerd in 1981 en stopte in 2021.
De naam Pajero komt van Leopardus pajeros, de Pampas-kat. Mitsubishi verkocht de SUV als de Montero in Noord-Amerika, Spanje en Latijns-Amerika (behalve Brazilië en Jamaica) omdat de term "pajero" een denigrerende betekenis heeft (het betekent "idioot") in het Spaans. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk was het bekend als de Shogun (??), vernoemd naar het Japanse woord voor "generaal". Het model werd in Noord-Amerika in 2006 stopgezet.
De namen Pajero, Montero en Shogun werden ook gebruikt voor andere, niet-mechanisch verwante modellen, zoals de Pajero Mini kei-auto, de Pajero Junior en de Pajero iO/Pinin mini-SUV's, en de middelgrote SUV's gebaseerd op de Triton/Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport. De Pajero is een van de vier modellen van Mitsubishi (de andere zijn de Triton, Pajero Sport en Pajero iO) die het Super-Select vierwielaandrijvingssysteem van Mitsubishi delen, in tegenstelling tot hun lichte Mitsubishi S-AWC vierwielaandrijvingssysteem.
De Pajero heeft meer dan 3,3 miljoen verkopen gegenereerd in zijn 40-jarige bestaan. De naam leeft voort met de kleinere Pajero Sport, die is gebaseerd op de Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pick-up. Ondanks de gelijkenis in naam, deelt de Pajero Sport geen van de oorspronkelijke basisstructuren van de Pajero en is het kleiner in algehele omvang.
