라트나푸라 지구
라트나푸라는 사바라가무와 주에 속한 스리랑카의 한 지구입니다. 스리랑카의 25개 지구 중 하나로, 국가 행정 구분의 두 번째 단계에 해당합니다. 이 지구는 스리랑카 중앙정부가 임명하는 지구 서기관(과거에는 Government Agent로 알려짐)이 이끄는 지구 사무국에 의해 행정이 운영됩니다.
면적은 3,275km²이며, 2012년 인구조사에 따르면 인구는 1,082,277명입니다. 도시는 스리랑카 남서부의 이른바 습윤 지대에 위치해 있습니다. 강수량은 주로 5월부터 9월까지의 남서 몬순에 의해 발생합니다. 연중 나머지 기간에도 대류성 강우로 인한 상당한 강수가 있습니다. 연평균 강수량은 약 4,000~5,000mm이며, 평균 기온은 24~35°C로 습도가 높습니다. 도시는 해발 21m(69피트)에 위치해 있습니다.
라트나푸라는 스리랑카 중남부의 칼루 강가(블랙 리버) 연안에 위치하며, 수도 콜롬보에서 남동쪽으로 약 101km(63마일) 떨어져 있습니다. Ratnapura는 Rathnapura로도 표기됩니다. ‘Ratnapura’라는 이름은 산스크리트어로 ‘보석의 도시’를 의미하며, pura(도시)와 ratna(보석)에서 유래했습니다. 스리랑카의 주요 보석 상인들 다수가 이 도시를 거점으로 활동합니다. 보석 채굴 외에도 이 도시는 쌀과 과일 생산으로도 잘 알려져 있습니다. 도시 주변에는 차와 고무 대규모 플랜테이션이 펼쳐져 있으며, 이 지역에서 재배되는 차는 저지대 차로 불립니다. 라트나푸라에서 스리 파다로 향하는 경로도 있습니다. 주요 견학지로는 신하라자 숲 보호구역과 우다왈라웨 국립공원이 있습니다. 주변 지역은 트레킹과 조류 관찰로 인기가 높습니다.
