캔디 지구
캔디 지구는 중앙 주에 속한 스리랑카의 한 행정 구역입니다. 면적은 1906.3km²이며, 지구의 수도는 캔디입니다. 캔디는 스리랑카 고대 왕조 시대의 마지막 수도였습니다. 이 도시는 캔디 고원에 위치한 언덕들 사이에 자리하고 있으며, 주로 차 재배지로 이루어진 열대 플랜테이션 지역에 둘러싸여 있습니다. 캔디는 행정적이면서도 종교적인 도시이며, 중앙 주의 수도이기도 합니다. 또한 불교 세계에서 가장 신성한 예배 장소 중 하나인 불치사(스리 달라다 말리가와)가 있는 곳입니다. 이 도시는 1988년에 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되었습니다.
캔디는 섬에서 두 번째로 큰 도시이며, 현대 스리랑카 중앙 주의 수도입니다. 지리적 위치 덕분에 섬의 주요 교통 중심지로 발전하였습니다. 캔디는 스리랑카 중앙 고지대로 들어가는 관문으로, 섬의 모든 방향에서 주요 도로를 통해 접근할 수 있습니다. 철도 노선은 콜롬보에서 출발하여, 항구와 서해안을 지나 캔디를 거쳐 바둘라까지 이어지며, 이는 중앙 고지대의 가장 먼 지점입니다. 콜롬보–캔디 도로와 캔디–누와라 엘리야 도로는 스리랑카에서 가장 경치가 아름다운 도로 중 하나로 꼽힙니다. 콜롬보–캔디 도로는 고무 농장과 논을 지나며, 캔디–누와라 엘리야 도로는 논과 끝없이 펼쳐진 차 농장을 가로지릅니다. 두 도로 모두 굽이진 언덕을 따라 구불구불 올라갑니다. 현재 카다와타와 경치가 아름다운 카투가스토타를 경유하는 콜롬보–캔디 간 새로운 고속도로 건설을 위한 타당성 조사가 진행 중입니다.
캔디는 섬의 산악 지대이자 울창한 숲으로 덮인 내륙에 위치해 있습니다. 이 도시는 너클스 산맥과 한타나 산맥을 포함한 여러 산맥 사이에 자리하고 있어, 해발 약 500미터(1,600피트)의 고도를 가집니다. 인공적으로 조성된 캔디 호수 인근에 있으며, 우다와타 켈레 보호구역의 남쪽에 위치해 있습니다. 오늘날 우다와타 켈레 보호구역의 면적은 점차 감소하고 있습니다.
이 지역의 기후는 열대 우림 기후입니다. 캔디는 섬의 중심부이자 고지대에 위치해 있기 때문에, 특히 해안 지역과 비교하면 스리랑카의 다른 열대 기후 지역보다 비교적 더 시원하고 습한 기온을 보입니다. 누와라 엘리야는 캔디 남쪽에 위치해 있으며, 더 높은 고도 덕분에 더욱 서늘한 기후를 가집니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 캔디의 기후는 연평균 기온이 18°C 이상이기 때문에 여전히 열대 기후에 속합니다. 이 도시는 1월부터 4월까지 비교적 건조한 시기를 맞이합니다. 5월부터 7월, 그리고 10월부터 12월까지는 몬순 시즌으로, 이 기간에는 날씨가 불안정합니다. 3월부터 5월 중순까지는 간몬순 기간으로, 이때는 가벼운 비와 높은 습도가 특징입니다. 습도는 일반적으로 70%에서 79% 사이를 유지합니다.
캔디 시민들은 도시에서 다양한 여가와 오락 활동을 즐깁니다. 캔디는 매년 열리는 에살라 페라헤라로 유명한데, 이 행사에서는 부처님의 치아 사리를 덮는 데 사용되는 내부 성궤 중 하나가 도시의 거리들을 따라 성대한 행렬로 운반됩니다.
