Baana Samanala Peak
Bana Samanala Peak is a mountain in Sri Lanka’s Ratnapura District, situated near the sacred Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak). It is known locally as a “false peak” because from certain vantage points it appears similar to the nearby main summit. The taller of its twin peaks is often called Bana Samanala, while the smaller is known as Darmaraja-gala.
The mountain lies in the Samanala mountain range and is surrounded by montane forest and rich biodiversity. The slopes are densely vegetated with shrubs, bamboo, and highland flora, and the area supports various bird species and forest mammals. Because it is less traversed, the habitat remains relatively undisturbed.
Reaching Bana Samanala requires trekking from the Sri Pada trails, often via the Seetha Gangula route toward the Ratnapura side. There is no well-defined official path, so the route passes through forest, thorny bushes, and steep terrain. Near its summit, there is a flat rock area suitable for setting up a small tent, and a Buddhist flag marks the highest point.
The ideal time to climb Bana Samanala is between January and March, when weather conditions are more favorable and trails are safer. Access is typically done in conjunction with Sri Pada treks, and permission from the wildlife department is often required due to its location within highland forest reserves.
