ラトナプラ地区
ラトゥナプラは、サバラガムワ州に属するスリランカの地区です。スリランカ全25地区のうちの一つで、同国の第2レベルの行政区分にあたります。地区は、中央政府により任命される地区書記官(旧称:Government Agent)を長とする地区事務局によって管理されています。
面積は3,275km²で、2012年の国勢調査による人口は1,082,277人です。市はスリランカ南西部、いわゆる湿潤地帯に位置しています。降雨は主に5月から9月にかけての南西モンスーンによってもたらされます。残りの月にも対流性降雨による相当量の雨があります。年間平均降水量は約4,000~5,000mmです。平均気温は24~35℃で、湿度が高いのが特徴です。市の標高は海抜21m(69フィート)です。
ラトゥナプラは、スリランカ中南部のカル・ガンガ(ブラック・リバー)沿いに位置し、首都コロンボの南東約101km(63マイル)にあります。RatnapuraはRathnapuraとも表記されます。「Ratnapura」という名称はサンスクリット語で「宝石の都」を意味し、pura(町)とratna(宝石)に由来します。スリランカ有数の宝石商の多くがこの町を拠点としています。宝石採掘に加え、同市は米や果物の生産でも知られています。周囲には紅茶とゴムの大規模なプランテーションが広がり、この地域で栽培される紅茶はロー・カントリー・ティーと呼ばれます。ラトゥナプラ方面からスリー・パーダへ向かうルートもあります。周辺の見どころにはシンハラジャ森林保護区やウダワラウェ国立公園が含まれます。この地域一帯はトレッキングの人気地であり、バードウォッチングにも適しています。
