マタラ地区
マタラは、スリランカの南海岸にある都市で、コロンボから160kmの距離にあります。スリランカで最大級の都市の一つです。街にはスリランカの植民地時代の名残が多く残っています。三番目に長い川であるニルワラ・ガンガ(ブルーリバー)が旧市街と新市街を分けています。
16世紀と18世紀には、マタラはポルトガル人とオランダ人によって支配されていました。地域には現在でも文化や建築を見ることができます。人気のある灯台はポイント・ドンドラにあり、オランダ人によって建設され、スリランカで最も美しく古い灯台の一つとされています。マタラは商業が盛んな活気ある都市で、観光にほとんど依存しておらず、現代のスリランカの生活を垣間見ることができます。主な見どころは城壁、オランダ建築、よく保存されたマタラ砦、そして賑やかな街並みです。
パラヴィ・ドゥパタ寺院は、街の前にある小さな島、ピジョンアイランドにある比較的新しい仏教寺院です。2008年に建設された優雅な斜張橋でアクセスできます(2004年の津波で流された以前の橋の代わり)。寺院は美しい庭園に囲まれ、多数の仏像とアダムスピークの足跡のレプリカが安置されています。
マタラ砦は1560年にポルトガル人によって建設され、1640年にオランダ人によって大規模に再建されました。ゴールの攻略後のことです。砦は大きな石の城壁で構成され、ニルワラ川のラグーンと海の間の岬に位置しています。
オランダ改革派教会はマタラ砦内に1706年に建てられ、1762年の砦再建後、1767年に大規模に改築されました。
スター砦はニルワラ川の西側に位置します。1761年のマタラの反乱後、主要砦を川からの攻撃から守るためにオランダ人によって建設されました。独特な星形の砦の建設は1765年に完成しました。
旧ヌペ市場は1784年にオランダ人によって建設され、マタラ砦から約3.2km離れています。
セントメアリー教会はビーチロード沿いにあります。門の刻印(1769年)は、1762年のマタラの反乱後の再建を示しています。
