マナール地区
スリランカのマンナー地区は、北部州の北西部に位置しています。面積は1,996平方キロメートルです。マンナーはマンナー地区の主要都市で、アーバンカウンシルによって管理されています。市はマンナー島にあり、マンナー湾を見渡す場所に位置し、歴史的なケティースワラム寺院があります。かつてこの町は真珠漁の中心として知られ、2世紀の『エリュトゥラー海の航海記』にも記されています。マンナーはバオバブの木とマンナー要塞で有名です。要塞は1560年にポルトガル人によって建設され、1658年にオランダ人により占領され再建されました。壁や砦は残っていますが、内部はほとんど破壊されています。現代の町の景観は、教会、ヒンドゥー寺院、モスクが目立ちます。カトリック教会はこの町に司教区を置いています。鉄道ではマンナー線によりスリランカの他地域とつながっています。1983年から2009年のスリランカ内戦中、町はLTTEに占領されていました。
マンナー地区は、その植生と野生生物においてスリランカの他地域とは異なる独自性があります。マンナー島はスリランカでバオバブの木が育つ数少ない場所の一つです。サルは果実を好むため、この木は時に「モンキーブレッドツリー」と呼ばれます。
ジュゴンは中型の海洋哺乳類で、マンナー湾、ナッチクダ、ジャフナ島、アダムスブリッジ付近で見られます。IUCNによる保護状況は「危急種」であり、食用目的の乱獲や漁網への偶発的な捕獲が原因です。
Poecilotheria hanumavilasumicaという絶滅危惧種のタランチュラは、マンナー地域で初めてスリランカで発見されました。これはインド以外で記録された初の例です。ヴァンカライ保護区は、ラムサール条約に基づき水鳥の国際的に重要な湿地として認められており、マンナー島の南の本土に位置しています。
