Bezirk Ratnapura
Ratnapura ist ein Distrikt in der Provinz Sabaragamuwa in Sri Lanka. Er ist einer der 25 Distrikte Sri Lankas und stellt die zweite Ebene der administrativen Gliederung des Landes dar. Der Distrikt wird von einem Distriktsekretariat unter der Leitung eines Distriktsekretärs (früher als Government Agent bekannt) verwaltet, der von der Zentralregierung Sri Lankas ernannt wird.
Der Distrikt umfasst eine Fläche von 3.275 km² und hatte laut Volkszählung von 2012 eine Bevölkerung von 1.082.277 Einwohnern. Die Stadt liegt im südwestlichen Teil Sri Lankas in der sogenannten feuchten Zone. Die Niederschläge stammen hauptsächlich aus den südwestlichen Monsunen von Mai bis September. In den übrigen Monaten des Jahres kommt es ebenfalls zu erheblichen Niederschlägen durch konvektive Regenfälle. Der durchschnittliche jährliche Niederschlag beträgt etwa 4.000 bis 5.000 mm. Die durchschnittliche Temperatur variiert zwischen 24 und 35 °C, bei hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit. Die Stadt liegt 21 m (69 Fuß) über dem Meeresspiegel.
Ratnapura liegt am Kalu Ganga (Schwarzer Fluss) im südlichen Zentralteil Sri Lankas, etwa 101 km (63 Meilen) südöstlich der Landeshauptstadt Colombo. Ratnapura wird auch als Rathnapura geschrieben. Der Name „Ratnapura“ ist ein Wort aus dem Sanskrit und bedeutet „Stadt der Edelsteine“, abgeleitet von den Wörtern pura (Stadt) und ratna (Edelstein). Viele der bedeutendsten Edelsteinhändler Sri Lankas haben ihren Sitz in dieser Stadt. Neben dem Edelsteinabbau ist die Stadt auch für die Produktion von Reis und Obst bekannt. Große Plantagen mit Tee und Kautschuk umgeben die Stadt. Der in dieser Region angebaute Tee wird als Tieflandtee bezeichnet. Von Ratnapura aus führt auch eine Route zum Sri Pada. Zu den Ausflugszielen zählen das Sinharaja-Waldreservat und der Udawalawe-Nationalpark. Die umliegende Region ist ein beliebtes Ziel für Trekking und ein ausgezeichneter Ort für Vogelbeobachtung.
