King Mahanaga
King Mahanaga was an important figure in Sri Lanka's ancient history, particularly known for his role in the establishment of the Kingdom of Ruhuna in the 2nd century BCE. He was a member of the Sinhala royal family and a brother of King Devanampiyatissa, who is widely recognized for bringing Buddhism to Sri Lanka. King Mahanaga played a significant role in the expansion and consolidation of the Sinhala kingdom during a time of political fragmentation and external threats, such as invasions from South India.
Although not as well-known as his brother King Devanampiyatissa, King Mahanaga's reign is remembered for his efforts in securing the southern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka, particularly the region around the town of Tissamaharama, which would later become the capital of the Ruhuna Kingdom. His rule marked the rise of Ruhuna as a powerful and independent kingdom, a major player in Sri Lanka's political landscape during the early centuries of the Common Era. The establishment of Ruhuna under King Mahanaga helped create a balance of power between the northern and southern regions of the island, eventually leading to the kingdom's flourishing under later rulers.
King Mahanaga is also credited with promoting the construction of infrastructure such as tanks (reservoirs) and temples, which played a key role in the development of the region's agriculture and religious life. The construction of tanks helped in irrigating the fertile lands of Ruhuna, boosting rice cultivation, which became a vital economic resource for the region. This legacy of promoting irrigation and infrastructure development would continue to be a significant feature of Sri Lankan kingship in later centuries.
King Mahanaga's contributions to Sri Lanka's early history are still honored, particularly in the southern region, where remnants of ancient infrastructure and archaeological sites from his era can still be seen. Though not as widely celebrated in the historical narrative as other kings, his role in the creation of the Ruhuna Kingdom, his support for agriculture, and his promotion of Buddhism have left a lasting impact on Sri Lanka's cultural and political development.
