Округ Вавуния
Вавуния — один из 25 районов Шри-Ланки, второй уровень административного деления страны. Этот район управляется районным секретариатом, который возглавляет районный секретарь (ранее известный как агент правительства), назначаемый центральным правительством Шри-Ланки. Столицей района является город Вавуния.
С 5 века до н. э. по 13 век н. э. нынешний район Вавуния входил в состав Раджараты. После этого район Вавуния находился под контролем вождей Ванниар, которые платили дань преколониальному царству Джафна. Затем район попал под контроль португальцев, голландцев и британцев. В 1815 году британцы взяли под контроль весь остров Цейлон. Они разделили остров на три административные структуры, основанные на этнической принадлежности: сингалов из низменных районов, сингалов из Канди и тамилов. Район, который тогда назывался районом Ванни, был частью тамильской администрации. В 1833 году, согласно рекомендациям комиссии Кольбрук-Камерона, этнически основанные административные структуры были объединены в одну администрацию, разделенную на пять географических провинций. Район Ванни, вместе с районом Джафна и районом Маннар, составил новую Северную провинцию.
Позже район Ванни был переименован в район Муллайтиву, а затем в район Вавунию. Когда Цейлон получил независимость, Вавуния была одним из трех районов, расположенных в Северной провинции. Район Муллайтиву был отделен от северной части района Вавуния в сентябре 1978 года.
Части района Вавуния долгое время находились под контролем повстанческой организации Тигры освобождения Тамиль Илама в годы гражданской войны. Весь район был возвращен под контроль армией Шри-Ланки в 2008 году.
