Reino de Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa, também chamada de Pulathisipura e conhecida na antiguidade como Vijayarajapura, é a principal cidade do Distrito de Polonnaruwa na Província Centro-Norte, Sri Lanka. A cidade moderna de Polonnaruwa também é conhecida como “New Town”, enquanto a outra parte de Polonnaruwa permanece como a antiga cidade real do Reino de Polonnaruwa.

O segundo mais antigo de todos os reinos do Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa foi inicialmente estabelecido como um posto militar pelo reino cingalês. Foi renomeado Jananathamangalam pela dinastia Chola após sua bem-sucedida invasão da então capital do país, Anuradhapura, no século X. A Cidade Antiga de Polonnaruwa foi declarada um Patrimônio Mundial.

A Cidade Antiga de Polonnaruwa é onde estão localizadas as ruínas bem preservadas da antiga cidade de Polonnaruwa, um Patrimônio Mundial. As ruínas se estendem por uma ampla área de aproximadamente 4 km de norte a sul. Entre as muitas ruínas estão a Cidadela, o Quadrângulo, Gal Vihara (cingalês: templo de pedra) e Lankatilaka, Gal Potha (cingalês: livro de pedra), Menik e Rankoth Vihara santuários budistas, o mosteiro Alahena Pirivena, Lankatilaka (cingalês: Ornamento de Lanka), a stupa Kiri Vehera, a casa de imagens Tivanka-patamaghara (santuário budista), todos são atrações imperdíveis.
A oeste da cidade antiga encontra-se o Parakrama Samudra (cingalês: mar de Parakramabahu), um lago artificial construído no século XIII e reabilitado na década de 1950.

Polonnaruwa is the 2nd largest city in north central province in Sri Lanka. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO Polonnaruwa has a great history of conquest and struggle behind it and rightfully forms the third element in the Cultural Triangle.
