Wellawaya (Sinhala: ????????, Tamil: ????????,) is a town located in Monaragala District, Uva Province of Sri Lanka.

Bijzondere plekken in Badulla

  • Muthiyanganaya Raja Maha Viharaya ligt in het centrum van de stad Badulla. De geschiedenis van deze tempel gaat terug tot de tijd van Boeddha, maar het gebied rond Badulla gaat terug tot de 19e-18e eeuw v.Chr.

  • Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya (de Dowa Kaaptempel) ligt op enkele kilometers afstand van de stad Bandarawela aan de Bandarawela-Badullaweg. Deze tempel zou in de eerste eeuw voor Christus door koning Walagamba zijn gebouwd.

  • De Bogoda Houten Brug werd gebouwd in de 16e eeuw, tijdens het Dambadeniya-tijdperk. Dit zou de oudste nog bestaande houten brug in Sri Lanka zijn. De brug ligt 7 kilometer ten westen van Badulla.

  • De Dunhindawatervallen liggen op ongeveer 5 km afstand van Badulla. Ze zijn 63 meter hoog en worden beschouwd als een van de mooiste watervallen van Sri Lanka. De waterval dankt zijn naam aan de rokerige dauwdruppels die opspatten.

Over het district Badulla

Badulla is de hoofdstad van de provincie Uva in Sri Lanka. Badulla ligt ten zuidoosten van Kandy, bijna volledig omsloten door de Badulu Oya, ongeveer 680 meter boven zeeniveau en omgeven door theeplantages. De stad wordt overschaduwd door het Namunukula-gebergte. Badulla ligt ongeveer 230 km van Colombo, richting de oostelijke hellingen van de centrale heuvels van Sri Lanka.

Badulla en omgeving zijn een echte aanrader voor ecotoeristen, aangezien het Horton Plains National Park en de Knuckles Mountains op een paar uur afstand liggen

Over de provincie Uva

De provincie Uva is de op één na dunst bevolkte provincie van Sri Lanka, met 1.187.335 inwoners, opgericht in 1896. De provincie bestaat uit twee districten: Badulla en Moneragala. De hoofdstad van de provincie is Badulla. Uva grenst aan de oostelijke, zuidelijke en centrale provincies. De belangrijkste toeristische trekpleisters zijn de Dunhinda-watervallen, de Diyaluma-watervallen, de Rawana-watervallen, het Yala National Park (deels gelegen in de zuidelijke en oostelijke provincies) en het Gal Oya National Park (deels gelegen in de oostelijke provincie). De heuvels van Gal Oya en het centrale gebergte vormen de belangrijkste hooglanden, terwijl de rivieren Mahaweli en Menik en de enorme reservoirs Senanayake Samudraya en Maduru Oya de belangrijkste waterwegen in de provincie Uva zijn.
