東部州
スリランカの別の州で、主にその黄金のビーチと天然の港で知られる東部州は、面積9,996 km²で、トリンコマリー、バッティカロア、およびアンパーラの3つの行政区で構成されています。1988年から2006年の間、この州は一時的に北部州と合併して北東州を形成しました。しかし、北東州は、最高裁判所の判決により、2007年1月1日に正式に北部州と東部州に再分割されました。

トリンコマリーは東部州の州都で、島の東海岸に位置し、ジャフナの南約113マイルにあります。トリンコマリーは天然の深水港で世界的に有名です。都市は半島上に建てられており、内港と外港を分けています。この都市には、歴史的なタミル名「ティルコンマライ」にちなんで呼ばれる有名な古代のコネスワラム寺院があり、その英語化された名前が由来です。また、スリランカの海上および国際貿易の歴史において重要な役割を果たした港でもあります。パーリ語では「ゴカンナ」、サンスクリット語では「ゴカルナ」と呼ばれます。
トリンコマリー湾の港は、その大きさと安全性で知られています。インド洋の他の港とは異なり、あらゆる種類の船舶があらゆる天候で利用可能です。ビーチではサーフィン、スキューバダイビング、釣り、ホエールウォッチングが行われます。都市にはスリランカ最大のオランダの要塞もあります。また、主要なスリランカ海軍基地およびスリランカ空軍基地も所在しています。町は自然の地形の端にある丘の上に位置しており、アーチのような形をしています。寺院はスワミ・ロックに建てられており、歴史的には「コナママライ」と呼ばれ、半島の崖から直接海へ400フィート落ちています。
天然の深水港であるトリンコマリーは、古代からマルコ・ポーロ、プトレマイオス、中国や東アジアの海上交易者たちを引き寄せてきました。一般的に「トリンコ」と呼ばれるこの港は、古代スリランカ王の時代から港として利用されてきました。ゴカンナ港への最も古い既知の言及は『マハーヴァンサ』に見られ、紀元前5世紀、ヴィジャヤ王が兄を後継者としてスリランカに来させることに失敗した際、最年少の息子パンドゥヴァスデヴァがゴカンナに上陸し、後にウパティッサガマで即位したと記されています。
トリンコマリーには多くの宗教施設があります。その中には、ポルトガル人によって1622年に破壊されたコネスワラム聖域があります(ポルトガル人はこれを「千柱の寺院」と呼び、高台を破壊の材料で強化しました)。破壊された寺院の一部の遺物はリスボン博物館に保管され、石碑も含まれています。
コネスワラムへ続く道路の入り口は、実際にはかつてのフレデリック要塞の入り口です。この要塞は1623年にポルトガル人によって建設され、1639年にオランダ人によって占領されました。その後、解体と再建を経て、1672年にフランス人によって攻撃され占領されました。

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.
