Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya ist ein buddhistischer Tempel in Bellanwila, Distrikt Colombo , Sri Lanka . Der Tempel liegt etwa 12 km südlich der Stadt Colombo, nahe der Straße Dehiwala – Maharagama, zieht täglich Hunderte von Gläubigen an und ist berühmt für sein jährliches Esala Perehera-Festival, das normalerweise im August oder September stattfindet. Als einer der am meisten verehrten buddhistischen Tempel in Sri Lanka strömen viele Gläubige herbei, um den heiligen Bo-Baum des Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara anzubeten, der als einer der ersten Ableger von Sri Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura , Sri Lanka, gilt. Der derzeitige Oberhirte des Bellanwila Rajamaha Vihara ist der ehrwürdige Dr. Bellanwila Dhammaratana Nayaka Thera.

Geschichte des Bellanwila-Tempels

Der Status des Schreins nach der Pflanzung der Bodhi-Knospe liegt im Dunkel der Geschichte. Es gibt keine literarischen oder archäologischen Belege, die seine Geschichte rekonstruieren könnten. Da Bellanwila zu dieser Zeit weit von der Hauptstadt der Insel entfernt lag und in der Geschichte der Insel keine bedeutende Rolle spielte, findet es weder in Chroniken noch in anderen historischen Dokumenten Erwähnung. Bellanwila wird in literarischen Werken des 15. Jahrhunderts erwähnt, als Kotte , das in der Nähe von Bellanwila liegt, zur Hauptstadt des Landes wurde.

Bellanwila Esala perehera

Aus der einfachen Bellanwila Esala Perehera, die 1947 unter Anleitung von Bellanwila Somaratana Nayaka Thera begann, ist ein berühmtes, farbenfrohes Festspiel geworden, das jedes Jahr große Menschenmengen anzieht. Es ist heute eines der bekanntesten jährlichen Kulturfestspiele Sri Lankas. Das Esala-Fest von Bellanwila, das normalerweise jedes Jahr eine Woche lang im August oder September stattfindet, zieht viele Gläubige aus dem Distrikt Colombo und anderen Teilen des Landes an. Die Attraktivität liegt nicht nur in der Farbenpracht der Prozession selbst, sondern vielmehr in den religiösen Aktivitäten, die dem Hauptereignis vorausgehen. Zum Esala-Fest von Bellanwila gehören Dhamma-Desana-Sitzungen (religiöse Predigten), die viele Gläubige in den Tempel locken. Die Anrufung des Segens beginnt mit einem einwöchigen Pirith-Gesang, auf den in den Nächten des Esala-Festes Prozessionen durch die Umgebung von Bellanwila ziehen.
