Dystrykt Vavuniya
Dystrykt Vavuniya jest jednym z 25 dystryktów Sri Lanki, stanowiącym drugi poziom podziału administracyjnego kraju. Dystrykt jest administrowany przez Sekretariat Dystryktu, na którego czele stoi Sekretarz Dystryktu (wcześniej znany jako Agent Rządowy), mianowany przez rząd centralny Sri Lanki. Stolicą dystryktu jest miasto Vavuniya.
Między V wiekiem p.n.e. a XIII wiekiem n.e. obszar dzisiejszego dystryktu Vavuniya należał do Rajaraty. Następnie dystrykt był rządzony przez wodzów Vanniar, którzy płacili trybut przedkolonialnemu królestwu Jaffna. Później dystrykt znalazł się pod panowaniem Portugalii, Holandii i Wielkiej Brytanii. W 1815 roku Brytyjczycy przejęli kontrolę nad całą wyspą Cejlon. Podzielili ją na trzy struktury administracyjne oparte na podziale etnicznym: nizinni Syngalezi, syngalezi z Kandyan oraz Tamilowie. Dystrykt, który wówczas nosił nazwę Dystryktu Vanni, był częścią administracji tamilskiej. W 1833 roku, zgodnie z zaleceniami Komisji Colebrooke’a-Camerona, struktury administracyjne oparte na podziale etnicznym zostały zjednoczone w jeden system administracyjny podzielony na pięć prowincji geograficznych. Dystrykt Vanni, wraz z Dystryktem Jaffna i Dystryktem Mannar, utworzył nową Prowincję Północną.
Dystrykt Vanni został później przemianowany na Dystrykt Mullaitivu, a następnie na Dystrykt Vavuniya. W czasie uzyskania niepodległości przez Cejlon, Vavuniya była jednym z trzech dystryktów położonych w Prowincji Północnej. Dystrykt Mullaitivu został wydzielony z północnej części Dystryktu Vavuniya we wrześniu 1978 roku.
Części Dystryktu Vavuniya przez wiele lat podczas wojny domowej znajdowały się pod kontrolą rebelianckiej organizacji Tygrysów Wyzwolenia Tamilskiego Ilamu. Cały dystrykt został odzyskany przez siły zbrojne Sri Lanki w 2008 roku.
