Namunukula
Namunukula è una catena montuosa situata vicino a Badulla, la capitale della provincia di Uva negli altopiani sud-orientali dello Sri Lanka. Con un’altezza di 2.035 metri sul livello del mare, è una delle 12 montagne più alte del paese e rappresenta la vetta più elevata nella parte orientale della catena montuosa meridionale, che si estende da Siri Pada (Picco di Adamo) a ovest fino a Namunukula a est. La montagna domina le aree di Spring Valley e Passara, note per le loro piantagioni di tè, ed è parte integrante della famosa regione del tè di Uva, che si estende per circa 40 km da Horton Plains.
Diversi sentieri conducono all’altopiano di Namunukula, il più semplice dei quali inizia vicino al passo tra Spring Valley e Passara. Il passo è facile da trovare, poiché una sola strada attraversa la valle. Basta seguire la strada B97 attraverso Spring Valley verso Demodara, svoltare a sinistra presso il negozio nel centro del villaggio e proseguire lungo la strada secondaria quasi fino alla cima. Circa 300 metri prima del passo, un sentiero di escursionismo si dirama sulla sinistra. La salita non richiede abilità di arrampicata, ma è fisicamente impegnativa a causa della forte pendenza.
L’area boschiva ospita macachi, cervi sambar e cinghiali. I leopardi vivono anche nelle zone montuose dello Sri Lanka, ma vengono avvistati raramente. Sull’altopiano sommitale, con un diametro di circa 150 metri, si trovano piccoli santuari dedicati a Buddha, Vishnu e Ganesha. In Sri Lanka, Vishnu è venerato principalmente dai buddisti singalesi, mentre Ganesha è più associato alla tradizione tamil. Come nel caso del Picco di Adamo, si crede nell’esistenza di una divinità montana chiamata Indaka, che protegge la regione.
Il nome “Namunukula” significa “nove cime” in singalese e si riferisce all’intera catena montuosa, non solo al punto più alto. La catena si estende per circa 13 km da nord a sud, includendo aree da Badulla ai passi vicini. Un villaggio sul versante meridionale porta anch’esso il nome Namunukula, contribuendo all’unicità di questa regione montuosa scenica e culturalmente significativa negli altopiani dello Sri Lanka.

Dowa Raja Maha ViharayaDowa Raja Maha Viharaya (Dowa Cape Temple) lies few kilometres away from the Bandarawela town on the Bandarawela – Badulla Road. This temple is thought to be done by King Walagamba in the in first century BC.

Bogoda Wooden BridgeThe Bogoda Wooden Bridge was built in the 16th century during the Dambadeniya era. This is said to be the oldest surviving wooden bridge in Sri Lanka. The bridge is situated at 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of Badulla.

Dunhinda FallsDunhinda Falls is situated about 5 km away from Badulla town. It is 63 meters high and is considered to be one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka. The falls gets its name dew to the smoky dew drops spray.
Badulla District
Badulla is the capital of Uva Province in Sri Lanka. Badulla is located on the southeast of Kandy, almost encircled by the Badulu Oya , about 680 meters (2200 ft) above sea level and is surrounded by tea plantations. The town is overshadowed by the Namunukula range of mountains. Badulla is about 230km away from Colombo towards the eastern slopes of central hills of Sri Lanka.
Badulla and surroundings are highly recommended for eco-tourists as Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles mountains are few hours away.
Uva Province
The Uva Province is Sri Lanka's second least populated province, with 1,187,335 people, created in 1896. It consists of two districts called Badulla and Moneragala The provincial capital is Badulla. Uva is bordered by Eastern, Southern and Central provinces. Its major tourist attractions are Dunhinda Falls, Diyaluma Falls, Rawana Falls, the Yala National Park (lying partly in the Southern and Eastern Provinces) and Gal Oya National Park (lying partly in the Eastern Province). The Gal Oya hills and the Central Mountains are the main uplands, while the Mahaweli and Menik rivers and the huge Senanayake Samudraya and Maduru Oya Reservoirs are the major waterways in Uva province.
