Ville de Tissamaharama

Tissamaharama est situé à 264 km au sud de Colombo dans le district de Hambantota. Tissamaharama est accessible par la route principale Colombo-Galle-Hambantota (A1), qui se termine à Wellawaya dans le district de Monaragala. Bien que Tissamaharama ne soit pas reliée par ligne de chemin de fer, c'est un centre de transport de la province du sud.

La ville ombragée est agréablement située au milieu des vastes champs de riz qui se balancent au gré du vent provenant du grand réservoir d'eau de pluie Tissa Wewa, situé à 1 km au nord de la ville. Au centre des champs de riz se dresse l'impressionnant stupa Santagiri Dagoba, d'un blanc éclatant, haut de 56 m et d'une circonférence de 165 mètres. À l'extrémité éloignée du réservoir d'eau de pluie Tissa Wewa se trouve un sentier menant à un petit lac artificiel appelé Debera Wewa. On trouve également à Tissamaharama le stupa Menik Dagoba et le célèbre stupa Yatala Dagoba, qui, selon la croyance, contiendrait les reliques de Bouddha.

La plupart des hôtels et des maisons d'hôtes sont situés près du réservoir d'eau de pluie Tissa Wewa. Le village de Deberwewa abrite également des maisons d'hôtes situées près de son lac artificiel.

Attractions autour de Tissamaharama : En tant que centre de transport et avec quelques bons hôtels et maisons d'hôtes touristiques, Tissamaharama sert également de base pour des excursions vers le sanctuaire Bundala, le parc national Ruhuna Yala, Kataragama et le monastère Situlpahuwa.

About Hambantota District

Hambantota is a rural town in southeastern coastal area of Sri Lanka. It is also the capital of the Hambantota District in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Approximately 240 kms from Colombo, Hambantota is in the midst of transformation into a strategic port and commercial centre, undergoing extensive infrastructure development. Flanked by sweeping sandy beaches, Hambantota is a convenient location from which to visit nearby sights.

The Bundala National Park lays 20 km east of Hambantota and the Wirawila Sanctuary a little further off. The Ruhuna National Park and the Kataragama Temple are other attractions that can be accessed easily from this city.

About Southern Province

The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of the districts of Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Subsistence farming and fishing is the main source of income for the vast majority of the people of this region.

Important landmarks of the Southern Province include the wildlife sanctuaries of the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, the holy city of Kataragama, and the ancient cities of Tissamaharama, Kirinda and Galle. (Although Galle is an ancient city, almost nothing survives from before the Portuguese invasion.) During the Portuguese period there were two famous Sinhalese poets called Andare who was from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona who was from Denipitiya in Matara District, composing poems on common man.
