østlige provins
En anden provins i Sri Lanka, mest kendt for sine gyldne strande og den naturlige havn, Østprovinsen, som dækker et område på 9.996 km², består af tre administrative distrikter, nemlig Trincomalee, Batticaloa og Ampara. Mellem 1988 og 2006 blev provinsen midlertidigt sammenlagt med Nordprovinsen for at danne Nordøstprovinsen. Dog blev Nordøstprovinsen formelt opdelt igen i Nord- og Østprovinsen den 1. januar 2007 ifølge en afgørelse fra Højesteret.
Provinsen er omgivet af Nordprovinsen mod nord, Bengalsbugten mod øst, Sydprovinsen mod syd samt Uva, Central og Nordcentralprovinsen mod vest. Provinsens kyst domineres af laguner, hvoraf de største er Batticaloa-lagunen, Kokkilai-lagunen, Upaar-lagunen og Ullackalie-lagunen.
Trincomalee er hovedstaden i Østprovinsen og ligger på øens østkyst, cirka 113 miles syd for Jaffna. Trincomalee er verdenskendt for sin naturlige dybvandshavn. Byen er bygget på en halvø, som deler den indre og ydre havn. Byen er hjemsted for det berømte gamle Koneswaram-tempel, som refereres til under dets historiske tamilske navn Thirukonamalai, hvorfra det engelske navn stammer, og har været en havneby, der spillede en vigtig rolle i Sri Lankas maritime og internationale handels historie. Det omtales som Gokanna på pali eller Gokarna på sanskrit.
Trincomalee-havnen er kendt for sin store størrelse og sikkerhed; i modsætning til alle andre i Det Indiske Hav er den tilgængelig for alle typer fartøjer under alle vejrforhold. Strendene bruges til surfing, dykning, fiskeri og hvalsafari. Byen har også den største hollandske fæstning i Sri Lanka. Den huser store srilankanske flådebaser og en srilankansk luftvåbenbase. Byen ligger på en bakke i enden af en naturlig landformation, der ligner en bue; templet er bygget på Swami Rock, historisk kaldet Kona-ma-Malai, en klippe på halvøen, som falder direkte 400 fod ned i havet.
Trincomalee, en naturlig dybvandshavn, har siden oldtiden tiltrukket søfarende som Marco Polo, Ptolemæus og handelsfolk fra Kina og Østasien. Trinco, som det ofte kaldes, har været en havneby siden de gamle srilankanske kongers tid. Den tidligst kendte reference til havnen Gokanna findes i Mahavamsa, hvor det nævnes, at i det 5. århundrede f.Kr., da kong Vijaya, som ikke kunne overbevise sin bror om at komme til Sri Lanka som hans efterfølger, sendte sin yngste søn Panduvasdeva, som landede i Gokanna og derefter blev kronet i Upatissagama.
Trincomalee har mange hellige steder. Blandt dem er Konesvaram-helligdommen, som blev ødelagt i 1622 af portugiserne (som kaldte den Tusind Kolonnernes Tempel), og som forstærkede højderne med materialer fra dens ødelæggelse. Nogle af artefakterne fra det ødelagte tempel blev opbevaret på Lisbons Museum, inklusive stenskulpturer og indskrifter.
Indgangen til vejen, der fører til Koneswaram, er faktisk indgangen til det, der engang var Fort Fredrick. Fæstningen blev bygget i 1623 af portugiserne og erobret i 1639 af hollænderne. Den gennemgik derefter en fase med nedbrydning og genopbygning og blev angrebet og erobret af franskmændene i 1672.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.
