Província Ocidental
A província mais densamente povoada do Sri Lanka, a Província Ocidental, com uma área de 3.593 km², é a sede da capital legislativa do país, Sri Jayewardenepura. É também o lar do centro comercial do país, Colombo.
Quase todas as principais instituições de ensino da ilha estão localizadas na província ocidental. As universidades da província incluem a Universidade de Colombo, a Universidade de Sri Jayewardenepura, a Universidade de Kelaniya, a Universidade Aberta do Sri Lanka, a Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, a Universidade de Moratuwa e o Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. A Província Ocidental também possui o maior número de escolas do país.
A província ocidental é composta por três distritos: Colombo, Gampaha e Kalutara.
O Distrito de Colombo tem uma área de 642 km² e sua principal cidade é Colombo. Outras cidades populares e importantes do distrito são Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Homagama, Avissawella e Moratuwa. O Kotte Urban Development Council, criado na década de 1930 com um edifício moderno em Rajagiriya, foi sucedido pelo Kotte Urban Council, do qual uma grande parte foi removida e anexada ao Colombo Municipal Council, distrito de Borella, enquanto o Battaramulla Urban Council foi dissolvido e uma pequena parte de Battaramulla foi anexada ao Kotte Urban Council. Em 1997, o Kotte Urban Council tornou-se o Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council.
Mount Lavinia é uma cidade recentemente criada, localizada imediatamente ao sul de Colombo. Ela é o resultado da combinação de alguns subúrbios urbanos e comunidades importantes para fins administrativos. Os centros incluem Dehiwala e a estância balnear de Mount Lavinia. Também abriga os Jardins Zoológicos Nacionais do Sri Lanka, que continuam sendo um dos maiores da Ásia. Dehiwala e Mount Lavinia situam-se diretamente ao sul de Wellawatte, ao longo da artéria da Galle Road, que segue paralela à costa para o sul do país. É uma das regiões mais liberais do Sri Lanka e sedia o festival anual Rainbow Kite Festival.
O Distrito de Gampaha tem uma extensão de 1.386,6 km² e sua principal cidade é Gampaha. Outras cidades populares e importantes são Nittambuwa, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo e Veyangoda.
Gampaha é uma cidade urbana situada ao norte de Colombo e separada desta pelo Rio Kelani. O nome “Gampaha”, em cingalês, significa “Cinco Aldeias”. Esta cidade está localizada no centro do Distrito de Gampaha e fica a cerca de 4 km de Miriswatta, na estrada Colombo–Kandy. É cercada pelas cidades de Yakkala, Miriswatta, Weliweriya, Udugampola e Ja-Ela.
Nos últimos anos, Gampaha passou por um rápido desenvolvimento, com a construção de muitos novos centros comerciais, estradas, pontes e viadutos. Instituições privadas estiveram por trás da maioria dos programas de desenvolvimento nessa área.
Outro distrito da província ocidental é Kalutara, que possui uma extensão de 1.606 km² e tem como cidade principal Kalutara. Outras cidades importantes e populares deste distrito são Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Horana e Matugama.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
