King Dutugamunu
King Dutugemunu (161–137 BCE) is celebrated as one of Sri Lanka's greatest monarchs. He is renowned for uniting the island under one rule by defeating the South Indian King Elara, who controlled the northern region. Dutugemunu’s reign is remembered for promoting Buddhism, building monumental stupas like Ruwanweliseya, and supporting religious and social welfare projects.
He is also famed for his military prowess, leadership, and dedication to justice, which earned him a lasting place in Sri Lankan history and chronicles like the Mahavamsa. Beyond his conquests, he emphasized cultural and spiritual growth, making his reign a golden era of Buddhism and governance in ancient Sri Lanka.
