O Templo Gangaramaya está localizado na cidade de Colombo e é um dos templos mais famosos do Sri Lanka. Foi fundado há mais de 120 anos sobre os pântanos do Lago Beira como um local de aprendizado e adoração. O Dia da Lua Cheia de Navam em fevereiro tem um significado especial para os budistas. Desde 1979, o Templo Gangaramaya tem realizado festivais coloridos e vibrantes conhecidos como ‘Pereheras’ para comemorar este dia.

O festival é usado para mostrar muitos talentos nas artes tradicionais Kandyan. Além disso, o festival promove a harmonia entre as comunidades, pois pessoas, independentemente de raça ou religião, se reúnem para assistir às festividades.

O festival dura dois dias. A parte principal do festival é o desfile do Cofre das Relíquias Sagradas sobre o principal elefante decorado da parada.

Dançarinos com máscaras, dançarinos Kandyan, tamboristas, dançarinos com espadas, caminhantes sobre palafitas e muitos outros artesãos formam as paradas do Gangaramaya Navam Maha Perahera. Os eventos acontecem à noite, iluminados por tochas acesas. Eles também são acompanhados por centenas de monges, portadores de bandeiras budistas e elefantes tradicionalmente decorados com seus mahouts. O Gangaramaya Nawam Maha Perahera não deve ser perdido, é um dos melhores e mais coloridos festivais do Sri Lanka.

About Colombo District
