When it comes to Gems and Jewellery, Sri Lanka has a long-standing association with the subject due to its precious and natural gemstones. There are two main traditions of jewellery making – the Kandyan Tradition and the Galle Tradition. The Kandyan tradition is characterized by its intricate metalwork, while the Mirissa Tradition is known for its focus on precious stones. This specific workshop in Galle will be a traditional experience guided by a master artisan with over four decades of expertise, where you design and create your own unique jewellery piece using authentic tools and techniques.

Includes:

  • Step-by-step guidance from an experienced artisan
  • Use of traditional tools and basic materials
  • Complimentary tea and Sri Lankan snacks
  • A free moonstone gift at the end of the session
  • Optional private transportation available at a separate cost

Excludes:

  • Expenses of personal nature
  • Gratuities
  • Cost of precious metals and gemstones used in your jewellery piece

The Experience:

The workshop consists of learning how to make custom jewellery in an intimate, family-run setting with a maximum of four participants per session. For those seeking a deeper cultural immersion, a private six-hour workshop is also available. During the experience, you will actively participate in:

  • Designing and shaping your jewellery step by step
  • Melting, gauging, hammering, and soldering precious metals
  • Exploring gemstones and embedding gems
  • Smoothing, polishing, and adding finishing touches

You will gain insight into traditional techniques passed down through generations, while also examining rough and polished gems sourced from local mines. The artisan will teach you how to identify genuine versus fake stones and explain how to evaluate whether jewellery is made from the precious metal content claimed.

Note: You may take home the jewellery you create by covering the cost of metals and gemstones used. The workshop fee does not include the value of these materials.
