Vesak Pandals, also known as Vesak Thoran, are grand illuminated structures that portray stories from the Jataka tales during Vesak Poya Day. These intricate displays are among the most cherished traditions of Vesak celebrations in Sri Lanka. Often towering over the streets, these pandals are set up in busy Vesak Zones in Colombo and other cities, where people gather in thousands to admire their beauty. The Vesak Poya Day becomes especially magical as these structures light up the night, telling timeless tales of the Buddha’s previous lives through art and light.

Many Vesak Pandals are complemented by nearby Dansala, where visitors are treated to free food and drinks, enhancing the communal spirit of giving. The entire area is often filled with Bakthi Gee, or devotional songs, adding a soulful background to the glowing visuals. Vesak lanterns and Vesak decorations frame the area, creating a harmonious setting where people reflect on the teachings of the Buddha. Events like Buddha Jayanti and Buddha Purnima often coincide with these displays, making them even more meaningful and spiritually uplifting.

The construction of a Vesak Pandal is a collaborative effort, involving artists, electricians, and volunteers who work day and night to create these visual spectacles. In recent years, Vesak Pandals have also become a medium for modern creativity. Some include Vesak wishes and Vesak cards placed nearby for visitors to take home. Others feature interactive elements, allowing people to share Vesak greetings in Sinhala, Tamil, and English via digital screens or boards. Whether in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, or any other region, Vesak Pandals remain a central attraction, blending tradition, spirituality, and artistry into a brilliant celebration of the Vesak Poya spirit.
