Randoli Perahera
The Randoli Perahera is the grand culmination of the Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lanka’s most revered and visually spectacular religious festivals. Held annually in the historic city of Kandy, this procession honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, enshrined at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth). The festival spans several nights, with the Randoli Perahera marking its most elaborate and spiritually significant phase.
The term "Randoli" refers to the ornate palanquins that once carried Kandyan queens, symbolizing royal elegance and sanctity. These palanquins are central to the procession, which features a majestic array of caparisoned elephants, traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire performers, and torchbearers. At the heart of the parade is the Maligawa Tusker, a richly adorned elephant that carries a replica of the Sacred Tooth Relic in a golden casket, accompanied by the Diyawadana Nilame, the chief lay custodian of the relic.
The Randoli Perahera is not only a display of cultural artistry but also a profound spiritual event. It reflects a fusion of Buddhist devotion and ancient rituals, originally intended to invoke blessings for rainfall and prosperity. The procession's grandeur and deep-rooted traditions draw thousands of devotees and tourists alike, offering a unique glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich heritage.
The 2025 Randoli Perahera is scheduled to commence on August 4th, with nightly processions leading up to the grand finale on August 8th. The festival concludes with the Diya Kepeema, a symbolic water-cutting ceremony held at the Mahaweli River in Getambe, signifying purification and the end of the festivities.
Attending the Randoli Perahera offers an unforgettable experience, immersing spectators in a vibrant tapestry of color, rhythm, and devotion that has been preserved for centuries.
