Kumbal Perahera
Kumbal Perahera is the first and longest phase of the grand Esala Perahera held annually in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This sacred procession, which spans five nights, marks the beginning of the celebrations in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth). It is a vibrant display of faith, culture, and tradition.
The Kumbal Perahera features a dazzling procession of drummers, dancers, flag bearers, and beautifully adorned elephants. Each night, the pageant grows in splendor as traditional performers showcase Kandyan dance forms, whip-crackers clear the path, and torchbearers illuminate the streets, creating a mystical and reverent atmosphere.
Historically, this phase was designed to bless the city and drive away misfortune. It is also the first opportunity for devotees and visitors to witness the majesty of the Perahera before the Randoli Perahera begins. The main casket, symbolizing the Tooth Relic, is carried atop a majestic tusker, followed by a sacred entourage.
The Kumbal Perahera is typically held in July or August and attracts thousands of spectators each year. The streets of Kandy come alive with spiritual energy, making it a must-see for anyone interested in Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural traditions. Arriving early is recommended to secure a good viewing spot.
