デヴィヌワラ デヴィヌワラ デヴィヌワラ

デヴィヌワラ(ドンドラ)は、スリランカの最南端に位置する町です。インド洋に面し、マータラの近く、南部州にあります。周辺にはドンドラ・ヘッド灯台、古代ヴィハーラの遺跡、そしてテナヴァラムのヒンドゥー教の神社がいくつか存在します。

歴史的にはデヴィヌワラまたはドンドラ(18世紀から20世紀にかけて)として知られ、16世紀末までは重要な寺院港町の複合体でした。多宗教の拠点として、その主神は仏教の神ウプルヴァンであり、ヒンドゥー教徒にはテナヴァライ・ナヤナル(ヴィシュヌ神)として知られていました。最盛期には島で最も著名な宗教的聖地の一つであり、ヒンドゥー教と仏教のさまざまな宗派に属すると考えられる数千の像を有していました。その起源はダップラ1世(西暦659~660年)の時代に遡り、主にシンハラ王と南インドの商人組合によって維持されていました。彼らはこの港を巡礼地および重要な交易拠点として定期的に訪れ、マラバール海岸、東南アジア、北西アフリカ、ヨーロッパと広範な交流を持っていました。

さらに、ウプルヴァン寺院のバラモン僧は、近隣のカプガマ村に与えられたアグラハラムに居住していました。また、ウプルヴァン(ヴィシュヌ)寺院の敷地内には施しのホールも設けられていました。ガネーシャ神、シヴァ神、そしてパッティニ女神を含む多くのヒンドゥー教の神々の祠が、中央寺院の近くの西岸および東岸に位置していました。7世紀から15世紀にかけてのこれらの寺院の遺跡や再発見された彫像は、パッラヴァ芸術の最盛期を示しています。

About Southern Province

The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of the districts of Galle,Matara and Hambantota. Subsistence farming and fishing is the main source of income for the vast majority of the people of this region.

Important landmarks of the Southern Province include the wildlife sanctuaries of the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, the holy city of Kataragama, and the ancient cities of Tissamaharama, Kirinda and Galle. (Although Galle is an ancient city, almost nothing survives from before the Portuguese invasion.) During the Portuguese period there were two famous Sinhalese poets called Andare who was from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona who was from Denipitiya in Matara District, composing poems on common man.
