Kwatha

"Kwatha" is a term from Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine in India. It refers to a herbal decoction or medicated drink made by boiling herbs in water to extract their active ingredients.

Here's how Kwatha is typically prepared:

  1. Raw herbs (roots, bark, seeds, leaves, etc.) are taken—usually dried.

  2. These herbs are crushed or coarsely powdered.

  3. The herbs are boiled in water, usually in a 1:16 ratio (1 part herb to 16 parts water).

  4. The liquid is reduced to 1/4th of its original volume.

  5. The decoction is then filtered and used as medicine.

Uses:

  • Kwathas are prescribed for a variety of conditions depending on the herbs used.

  • They can help with digestion, detoxification, boosting immunity, treating infections, and more.

  • Some common kwathas include Dashamoola Kwatha, Punarnava Kwatha, and Guduchi Kwatha.
