Province de l'Ouest

La province la plus densément peuplée de Sri Lanka, la province de l'Ouest, qui s'étend sur 3 593 km², abrite la capitale législative du pays, Sri Jayewardenepura. Elle est également le centre commercial du pays, Colombo.

Presque toutes les institutions éducatives de premier plan de l'île se trouvent dans la province de l'Ouest. Les universités de la province comprennent l'Université de Colombo, l'Université de Sri Jayewardenepura, l'Université de Kelaniya, l'Université ouverte du Sri Lanka, l'Université de Défense Sir John Kotelawala, l'Université de Moratuwa et l'Institut sri-lankais des technologies de l'information. La province de l'Ouest possède également le plus grand nombre d'écoles du pays.

La province de l'Ouest se compose de trois districts : Colombo, Gampaha et Kalutara.

Le district de Colombo a une superficie de 642 km² et sa ville principale est Colombo. Les autres villes populaires et importantes du district sont Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Homagama, Avissawella et Moratuwa. Le Conseil de développement urbain de Kotte, créé dans les années 1930 avec un bâtiment moderne à Rajagiriya, a été remplacé par le Conseil urbain de Kotte, dont une grande partie a été supprimée et rattachée au Conseil municipal de Colombo, dans le quartier de Borella, tandis que le Conseil urbain de Battaramulla a été dissous et qu'une petite partie de Battaramulla a été rattachée au Conseil urbain de Kotte. Le Conseil urbain de Kotte est devenu le Conseil municipal de Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte en 1997.

Mount Lavinia est une ville récemment créée, située juste au sud de Colombo. Elle résulte de la combinaison de certains quartiers et communautés urbains clés à des fins administratives. Les centres comprennent Dehiwala et la station balnéaire de Mount Lavinia. Elle abrite également le Jardin zoologique national du Sri Lanka, qui reste l'un des plus grands d'Asie. Dehiwala et Mount Lavinia se trouvent directement au sud de Wellawatte le long de l'artère Galle Road, qui longe la côte vers le sud du pays. C’est l’une des régions les plus libérales du Sri Lanka et elle accueille le festival annuel des cerfs-volants arc-en-ciel de l’île.

Le district de Gampaha s’étend sur 1 386,6 km² et sa ville principale est Gampaha. Les autres villes populaires et importantes sont Nittambuwa, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo et Veyangoda.

Gampaha est une ville urbaine située au nord de Colombo et séparée de Colombo par la rivière Kelani. Le nom « Gampaha » en singhalais signifie « Cinq villages ». Cette ville est située au centre du district de Gampaha et se trouve à environ 4 km de Miriswatta sur la route Colombo-Kandy. Elle est entourée des villes de Yakkala, Miriswatta, Weliweriya, Udugampola et Ja-Ela.

Ces dernières années, Gampaha a connu un développement rapide, avec la construction de nombreux nouveaux centres commerciaux, routes, ponts et échangeurs. La plupart des programmes de développement de la région ont été réalisés par des institutions privées.

Un autre district de la province de l'Ouest est Kalutara, qui s'étend sur 1 606 km² et dont la ville principale est Kalutara. Les autres villes importantes et populaires de ce district sont Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Horana et Matugama.

Kalutara est une ville de villégiature située à environ 40 km au sud de Colombo.

  • The Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

  • The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

  • The Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

  • Sabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

  • North Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

  • The largest province of Sri Lanka, located in the dry zone being 10,714 km2 in extent, the North Central Province that consists of two administrative districts viz. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa,

  • The Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

  • Another province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
