The park provides a temporary residence for herds of elephants migrating between Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks during Sri Lanka’s dry and flood seasons. Hurulu Eco Park plays a vital role in the survival of elephant populations in the country.

Selles piirkonnas on läheduses kolm rahvusparki. Need on (A) Kaudulla rahvuspark, (B) Hurulu ökopark ja (C) Minneriya rahvuspark. Kõik need kolm parki on oma suurte elevandikarjade tõttu tohutult populaarsed nii kohalike kui ka välismaalaste seas üle maailma. Üldiselt leidub Minneriya rahvuspargis igal aastal juulist septembrini suuri elevantide karju, kes rändavad seejärel oktoobrist novembrini Kaudulla rahvusparki, kuna seal on palju vihma ja täituvad järved. Seejärel liiguvad elevandid edasi Hurulu ökoparki, et teha detsembrist jaanuarini oma rände viimane etapp.
